Chausson: Poème de l'amour et de la mer & Symphonie, Op. 20

Véronique Gens

Classical - Released March 1, 2019 | Alpha Classics

Hi-Res Booklet
Ernest Chausson is a most unusual figure in French music, positioned at the crossroads where the romanticism of Berlioz and Franck meet the language of Wagner and the symbolism of the young Debussy. His Poème de l’amour et de la mer is a unique score for the period and certainly his greatest work; simultaneously a profane, naturistic cantata, a monologue, and a song cycle, it was composed between 1882 and 1892. Véronique Gens is recording this cycle for the first time, although she has already issued Le temps des lilas with Susan Manoff at the piano ("Néère"), about which Ernst Van Bek wrote in Classiquenews: « it mesmerises with the nuancing of its colours, the allusive precision of every sung word ». Véronique Gens’ talent is equally on display in this recording too, with the Orchestre National de Lille – an orchestra she already knows well – under Alexandre Bloch, its new chief conductor, whose appointment and first concerts and recordings have already caused a sensation… The Symphony in B-flat major completes this programme: a summit of French symphonic writing, for some a milestone as important as the Symphony in D of Chausson’s teacher César Franck! © Outhere Music

Franck: Symphony in D Minor, FWV 48 - Chausson: Symphony in B-Flat Major, Op. 20

Jean-Luc Tingaud

Classical - Released January 12, 2024 | Naxos

Hi-Res Booklet
There is a lot that goes right on this 2024 release by the Rundfunks-Sinfonieorchester Berlin and conductor Jean-Luc Tingaud. One draw is a thorough review of the score of Chausson's Symphony in B flat major, Op. 20, on Tingaud's part, resulting in many small changes from previous performances. Despite the obvious pairing with Franck's Symphony in D minor -- Chausson borrows his cyclical structure from Franck, and the two works are awash in common influences, including Wagner -- this work is not often performed. To that end, the album will be essential for Chausson lovers and desirable for fans of 19th century French orchestral music generally. Moreover, Tingaud keeps good control over his orchestra in complex, rather difficult scores. The first movement of the Franck in his hands has a clean logic even as it is introducing the wealth of thematic material that makes up the symphony. Although the Naxos label is not normally where one turns for audiophile recording quality, producer Wolfram Nehls and his team, working in a studio at the Haus des Rundfunks in Berlin, hit the ball out of the park with great transparency (listen for the harp) and a burnished string sound. What is not to like? Both works offer measured finales, but some listeners will want more Wagnerian heft. Outlooks may differ on this, and enough seem to have liked Tingaud's approach to put the album on classical best-seller lists in early 2024. Sample generously and decide.© James Manheim /TiVo

D'Indy : Symphonie cévénole - Saint-Saëns : Symphonie No. 2 - Chausson : Soir de fête

Martin Helmchen

Classical - Released September 1, 2011 | PentaTone

Hi-Res Booklet
French music of the late Romantic era was almost completely overshadowed by the established German tradition, to the effect that many exceptional composers, such as Vincent d'Indy, Camille Saint-Saëns, and Ernest Chausson, were relegated to secondary status behind their German colleagues, and their works were seriously under-performed. This situation persisted through the 20th century, and the works on this 2011 hybrid-SACD from PentaTone Classics might seem unfamiliar because they were seldom programmed and recorded. Fortunately, in the 21st century there are champions for French symphonic music, such as Marek Janowski and the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, and the ongoing rediscovery of this somewhat neglected repertoire promises a restoration of some great pieces. Perhaps best known of the three selections, d'Indy's Symphony on a French Mountain Air is wonderfully atmospheric, and its delicate orchestration and evanescent moods in some ways anticipate Impressionism. The Symphony No. 2 in A minor is played far less frequently than Saint-Saëns' extremely popular Symphony No. 3, "Organ," though it is a solid piece of craftsmanship and is quite representative of the Classically oriented French symphonies produced in the mid-19th century. On its surface, Chausson's Soir de fête seems to have the strongest German flavor, yet while the composer was plainly influenced by Liszt and Wagner, the piece also owes a considerable amount of its verve to Berlioz. Janowski and the orchestra present these works with smooth technique and scintillating colors, and the depth and lushness of the ensemble's sound come across impressively in the multichannel format.© TiVo

Bartók, Janáček, Szymanowski

Piotr Anderszewski

Classical - Released January 26, 2024 | Warner Classics

Hi-Res Booklet
After well-received albums devoted to Bach and Schumann, pianist Piotr Anderszewski turns to music of his native Eastern Europe on this 2024 release, which made classical best-seller charts early that year. Anderszewski is known for his artfully curated and constructed programs, but this one is not so cohesive; the excerpts from Janáček's On an Overgrown Path set were recorded in 2016, while the short pieces by Szymanowski and Bartók were added in 2023. The Janáček works, though short, are of a slightly different kind from the other pieces, which are real miniatures. When Anderszewski gets to those, however, he hits his stride. Especially interesting are Bartók's 14 Bagatelles, Op. 6, presented in full. These aren't heard overly often. Anderszewski says that "the works recorded on this album carry within them a spirit of rebellion," which doesn't quite fit these short pieces, but then on his second try, he comes much closer: "No room here for stylization or decorum; they draw upon the very roots of music." Early works composed in 1908, they contain ideas that Bartók would explore over his entire career. They have folkish accents but also intensive exploration of mode and rhythm. Anderszewski's careful style is ideal here, and the listener hearing the whole set will become increasingly engrossed. Hardly less appealing are the six pieces from Szymanowski's 20 Mazurkas, Op. 50, which explore the folk dance model in a less radical but no less detailed way. For the lover of Eastern European music of the early 20th century, which is finally and rightfully finding a consistent place on concert programs, this is a recording that will merit multiple hearings.© James Manheim /TiVo

Prokofiev: Visions fugitives, Piano Sonata No. 8, Romeo & Juliet

Nicholas Angelich

Classical - Released January 22, 2021 | Warner Classics

Hi-Res Booklet
The third and last of the "war Sonatas", the Eighth Sonata was premiered by Emil Gilels in 1944. Serious and virtuosic, it is also the longest and, probably, the most "human" (Michel Hofmann) sonata by its author. The French-American pianist Nicholas Angelich gives a fascinating translation, with great fluidity, with much left unspoken, and a heightened sense of  poetic and dreamy sound. This album, which is wholly dedicated to Prokofiev is of a very high standard. Thanks to his exceptional technical mastery and his musical intelligence, Nicholas Angelich manages to reveal the infinite richness of a music too often known for its virtuosic side, which tends to be, under some fingers, quite brutal. The twenty pieces of Visions Fugitives unfold with a wide variety of refined, liquid and mysterious timbres. The performer's fine filigree work perfectly matches that of the composer in this beautiful recording that ends brilliantly with a selection of five pieces from the ballet Romeo and Juliet transcribed for the piano by the composer himself. The variety of the colours and the power of Angelich's piano would almost make us forget the orchestral magic of this famous score. © François Hudry/Qobuz
