Best Of 20 Chansons

Charles Aznavour

French Music - Released December 12, 1994 | Universal Music Division Barclay

Fans looking for an entrée to Charles Aznavour's daunting catalog will do well to pick up this 20-track career summary. Reduced down from the two-disc 40 Chanson D'or collection, 20 Chansons focuses on Aznavour's French-language material from the '60s and '70s (the singer also cut many records in English and a few in Italian). Shot full of his famously impassioned and slightly raspy vocals, the many highlights include a gypsy-tinged "Les Deux Guitares," the pop ballad "L'Amour C'Est Comme un Jour," and the Sinatra swinger "For Me, Formidable." There's even room for some psych pop ("Le Plaisirs Démodés") and mambo ("Le Comediens"). Most of all, though, the disc includes shining examples of Aznavour's superb chanson balladry. A very welcome addition to the sparse selection of worthwhile Aznavour retrospectives.© Stephen Cook /TiVo

Idiote je t'aime...

Charles Aznavour

French Music - Released January 1, 1972 | Universal Music Division Barclay

Hi-Res
Throughout his long, prolific career, Charles Aznavour has worked in a variety of musical styles, from traditional French chanson to small-combo jazz to easy listening pop to a few rather odd side trips into the distinctively Gallic form of '60s beat music known as ye-ye. Yet 1995's IDIOTE JE T'AIME--yes, that translates to "I love you, Idiot"--showcases Aznavour in the style for which his perhaps best known and most beloved by his fans, backed by a full yet never overbearing orchestra (think Petula Clark, not Nelson Riddle-era Frank Sinatra.) With songs--all self-penned--spanning nearly all of Aznavour's illustrious career, IDIOTE JE T'AIME is not unlike a greatest hits, only with all new recordings and often radical re-arrangements. The results are both an excellent starting point for newcomers and a delightful work for longtime fans.© TiVo

Sinatra And Sextet: Live In Paris

Frank Sinatra

Jazz - Released January 1, 1962 | FRANK SINATRA DIGITAL REPRISE

If you've cringed at the quality of recent Sinatra projects, this 1962 session will remind you of his glorious past. The 26 cuts include many Sinatra signature pieces ("I've Got You Under My Skin," "The Second Time Around," "Night And Day," "Moonlight In Vermont") with backing from an intimate small band that provides lush, supportive frameworks around which Sinatra can build and create his inimitable charm. The session also shows Sinatra at his most loutish, with some crude (even for the time) commentary during the beginning of "One For My Baby," and borderline racist cracks at the end of "Ol' Man River" and start of "The Lady Is A Tramp." But Sinatra's vocal excellence often overcame his idiocy and bad manners, and it does on this fine set.© Ron Wynn /TiVo

Greatest Golden Hits

Charles Aznavour

French Music - Released April 23, 1996 | Capitol Records

Greatest Golden Hits collects English-language versions of French-Armenian crooner Charles Aznavour's biggest hits, including his two U.K. hits, the chart-topper "She" and "The Old Fashioned Way." It can safely be said that Aznavour sings with an unparalleled conviction and passion -- one listen to the aching masterpiece "Yesterday When I Was Young" easily demonstrates how his golden talents shine through in English as well as French. One easily believes every word Aznavour sings, from lamenting about his lost youth to the bittersweet tragic story of a lonely transvestite in the epic "What Makes a Man." Unfortunately, some of these songs don't quite hold up in English, and their arrangements are somewhat lacking, such as "Hold Back the Night," which sounds like a theme from a bad 1980s network television series, and the drippy "I'll Be There." "You've Let Yourself Go" sounds awkward, and pales in comparison to the wonderful French version. Regardless, there are enough magic moments on this album that one can easily overlook (or skip) those tracks and concentrate on the others. Highlights include the opening "After Loving You," his take on "Ave Maria," the glorious "The Times We've Known," the cool "La Baraka," the festive and timeless "It Will Be My Day" and "Sunday's Not My Day," and "A Blue Like the Blue of Your Eyes," which was also a hit for Edith Piaf. So, for fans of Charles Aznavour, this delightful English-language collection is a welcome addition to his catalog, but should not detract one from the original, sublime French versions.© Jose F. Aznavour 2000

Charles Aznavour

French Music - Released January 1, 2000 | Universal Music Division Barclay

Hi-Res
The venerable Charles Aznavour graced his adoring public with a stellar album of material for the new millennium, titled Aznavour 2000. The album tends to sway toward upbeat, jazzy, swingin' numbers, such as the opener, "Le Jazz Est Revenu," "Elle a le Swing au Corps," "La Formule Un," and "Nos Avocats." His voice, always warm and compassionate, is like an old friend, giving this album a feeling of intimacy, although his public spans the globe and numbers in the millions. The shining moments, however, are the ballads, which drip with his eternally stylish and sophisticated melancholy, such as the lovely and heartbreaking "De la Scene a la Seine," a tribute to the late, tragic Italian-Egyptian star Dalida. The downcast "Qu'Avons-Nous Fait de Nos Vingt Ans" echoes of his ancestral Armenia and "Je Danse Avec l'Amour" is a classic-sounding French chanson. "Quand Tu M'Aimes" and the samba-styled "Je Ne Savais Pas" are from his musical Lautrec (based on the life of Tolouse-Lautrec) and offer more variety to this winning and marvelously orchestrated album. A sheer pleasure through and through for fans of the amazing and enduring Charles Aznavour.© Jose F. Promis /TiVo
