Everythangs Corrupt (Explicit)

Ice Cube

Hip-Hop/Rap - Released December 7, 2018 | Cubevision JV New Agreements

Booklet
O’Shea Jackson aka Ice Cube likes to remind us who the real OG is. The last time was in 2010 with the album I Am The West which ultimately wasn’t a huge success, but things have changed since then. Already in 2015, the biopic Straight Outta Compton rekindled the flame for his former group N.W.A. among the newer generation. Then a certain Donald Trump moved into the White House. Meanwhile, Ice Cube had been focusing exclusively on Hollywood films (Rampart, 21 Jump Street, Ride Along 1 and 2, Barbershop The Next Cut, xXx Reactivated and Fist Fight) although they hardly gave the likes of Citizen Kane a run for its money. He also launched BIG3, his 3-on-3 basketball league featuring old NBA stars. You would think that hip hop has become just a vague memory for him, but Everythangs Corrupt is proof to the contrary. Right from outset with the single Arrest The President he plays the raging pitbull against the man currently living at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington. His voice is certainly no longer as aggressive as in his holy trinity of the early ‘90s (AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted, Death Certificate and The Predator) but the ex N.W.A. member has kept his old school flow as soulful as ever, particularly in Streets Shed Tears and the cheeky Can You Dig It?. This time, there are no trap sounds, nor does it feature a whole load of young people to appeal to under-18s. Ice Cube even has one 50-year-old guest, the great Too $hort, on Ain’t Got No Haters. Obviously, with it’s 20th century vibe, this tenth album is light-years away from the sounds of XXXTentacion or Earl Sweatshirt. But by sticking to what he knows and accepting his age and his legacy, Cube has produced an album that in no way suggests it’s time to retire. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

Purcell - Birthday Odes for Queen Mary

The King'S Consort

Classical - Released September 24, 2021 | VIVAT

Hi-Res Booklet
For over thirty years Robert King and his King's Consort have founded their reputation on their interpretation of Purcell's music. Their complete recording in 1988 of the English composer's Odes caused a sensation. This new album, released by Vivat which is Robert King's own label founded in 2013, was recorded in the generous acoustics of the Fairfield Halls, South London's largest and recently restored arts centre. This album is therefore a true return to his roots.Leading a fine array of soloists, including Carolyn Sampson, Iestyn Davies, Charles Daniels and Matthew Brook, Robert King has chosen for this disc two festive Odes written for Queen Mary and a more melancholy one for King James II, before his abdication and exile to France, where he was supported by his cousin, King Louis XIV. These compositions are among Purcell's best and most original, with their succession of overtures, varied choruses, arias and pleasant ritornelli. As Robert King himself points out, the context of this recording, made in 2020 at the height of the global pandemic, and with appropriate social distancing, is curiously reminiscent of the plague epidemic which Purcell survived in 1665, during which fifteen percent of London's population died. This gloomy climate, coupled with Robert King's own vicissitudes, surely contributed to the nostalgic tone that shrouds his new approach to the admirable music of Henry Purcell. © François Hudry/Qobuz

The Terminator (Original Soundtrack Album)

Brad Fiedel

Film Soundtracks - Released February 14, 2020 | Milan Records

One underrated highlight of the classic 1984 science-fiction film The Terminator was the marvelous synthesizer score by Brad Fiedel. Side one of The Terminator is comprised of six compositions by Fiedel, who once served as a keyboardist for Hall & Oates briefly in the mid-1970s. "The Terminator Theme" is a spectacular piece of haunting synthesizer music; each layer is perfectly effective, especially the deceptively simple melody line. "Tunnel Chase" is bombastically chilling while "Love Scene" is a soft, mournful piano-based version of the main theme; its bittersweet feel corresponds nicely to the pivotal scene that it supports. Fiedel's synthesizer work on "Factory Chase" is full of glassy squeals and scary bursts, and Ross Levinson adds touches of electric violin. Side two consists of generic, mid-'80s synthesizer-based, dance-oriented pop/rock, but that makes sense since most of these songs were used in club scenes in the film. Tahnee Cain and Tryanglz contribute three songs (Cain, aka Tane Cain, was married to keyboardist Jonathan Cain of the Babys and Journey); all three have typical hard-rock rhythm guitar and flashy solos, but the best one is "Burnin' in the Third Degree." The Jay Ferguson and 16mm cut "Pictures of You" is really only notable because the emphasis on quirky synthesizers is so different from Ferguson's solo rock hits "Thunder Island" and "Shakedown Cruise." The hyperactive Linn Van Hek song "Intimacy" is a mixture of latter-day new wave and primitive, early techno. .© Bret Adams /TiVo

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (Steven Spielberg, 1982) Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

John Williams

Film Soundtracks - Released January 1, 1982 | Geffen*

To coincide with the re-release of a new version of E.T. with previously unseen footage and a digitally remixed soundtrack, this CD -- digitally remastered and remixed, natch -- was issued. The big (well, rather small actually) bonuses this time around are three previously unreleased selections from the score, boosting the track total to 21. Judged purely by the standards of soundtrack music, John Williams' score is nothing special. Its languorous orchestration is delivered with a good deal of restraint, to convey the mystery, uncertainty, and sometimes unease of a melodramatic film about the discovery of extraterrestrial life. Indeed at times you'll be wondering if the volume on your stereo has been accidentally lowered, as some sections fall toward the threshold of audibility. Only occasionally does the mood become jubilant or overtly sentimental. It's for the most part unobtrusive background moods for the film's story, more comforting than eerie, whether or not that was the intention. At 75 minutes of running time it's good value, though.© TiVo

The Essential Ann Peebles

Ann Peebles

Soul - Released March 9, 2015 | Fat Possum

In 2013 and 2014, Fat Possum reissued five of the seven albums Ann Peebles recorded for Hi. In 2015, the label continued their handling of the singer's catalog with The Essential Ann Peebles, a 40-track overview that covers all seven Hi albums, from This Is Ann Peebles (1969) through The Handwriting Is on the Wall (1978). With only two inconsequential exceptions, this contains all of Peebles' charting R&B singles, including the Top Ten hits "Part Time Love" and "I Can't Stand the Rain," as well as other Southern soul standouts like "I Pity the Fool," "Breaking Up Somebody's Home," and the should-have-been-bigger "Beware." This is the next best thing to obtaining all the albums. It goes deeper than a standard overview and does so with smart selections.© Andy Kellman /TiVo

Sleepy Hollow

Danny Elfman

Film Soundtracks - Released January 1, 1999 | Hollywood Records

Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow reunites the distinctive director with his equally noteworthy musical collaborator, Danny Elfman. His orchestral score for the film features the mix of darkness and wonder that has graced Burton's previous films and other fantasy and horror movies like Army of Darkness and Dolores Claiborne. Much of Sleepy Hollow's score is grim and tense, using eerie strings, haunting vocals, and ominous brass and percussion to convey the supernatural suspense of Burton's version of Washington Irving's classic tale. However, Elfman also captures the ethereal, romantic side of the story on gentle woodwind and string pieces. A highly dramatic, evocative score, Sleepy Hollow may or may not be enjoyable listening outside of the film's context, but it definitely adds another level of depth to an already compelling movie.© Heather Phares /TiVo
