Brahms: The Final Piano Pieces, Op. 116-119

Stephen Hough

Classical - Released January 3, 2020 | Hyperion

Hi-Res Booklet
By the early 1890s, Johannes Brahms began thinking that his career was approaching its end, perhaps because of his growing awareness of his mortality, due to the deaths of several close friends. In spite of that, encouragement from Brahms' publisher Fritz Simrock and a renewed burst of creativity brought about the major works of his final years, which included chamber pieces for clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld; a collection of arrangements of German Folk Songs; the Four Serious Songs; the 11 Chorale Preludes; and the piano pieces published as the Fantasias, Op. 116, the Intermezzos, Op. 117, the Clavierstücke, Op. 118, and the Clavierstücke, Op. 119. This group of 20 keyboard pieces collectively represent the autumnal and sometimes gloomy moods that dominated Brahms' thoughts in his last decade, and have even retroactively colored the overall character his music, suggesting a nostalgic attitude in his work as a whole. Yet there is a balance between melancholy and exuberance in Brahms, and while much can be made of the sorrowful events in his life that influenced him, particularly in the Intermezzos, Op. 117 (which he considered to be lullabies for his sorrows), expressions in the late piano music are artfully conceived and perhaps less a measure of Brahms' emotional state than of his genius. Stephen Hough has recorded Brahms' piano concertos, and some of the chamber works, but this 2019 Hyperion album is his first album since 2001 devoted to Brahms' solo piano works. At this stage of his career, Hough seems to have found the right approach to these character pieces, which can be just as fiery and passionate as they are sad or sentimental. However, just as important are their structures and formal designs, which show an active and lively imagination, especially in Brahms' use of chromatic harmony and his sometimes expansive treatment of the Romantic "miniature."© TiVo

Chopin: Ballades & Berceuse & Barcarolle & Scherzo No. 4

Evgeny Kissin

Classical - Released March 1, 1999 | RCA Red Seal

Evgeny Kissin has been accused of being a bland interpreter in recent years. True, his Prokofiev First and Third (DG) was guilty of a rather smooth perfectionism, the kind of deft pianism you admire--while you're reading the paper. But at least his last two releases on RCA, this Chopin disc and a brilliant Schumann one earlier this year, are anything but bland. Here, Kissin plays Chopin with dynamics and accenting more than vaguely reminiscent of Horowitz at his best. He displays far better control, in fact, of forte markings and of rubato than the often self-possessed Horowitz usually did.The Four Ballades have drawn the attention of so many great pianists in so many truly great performances; it's difficult to compile a list of favorites: Rubinstein (RCA), Ashkenazy (London), and Zimerman (DG) are just a few. Kissin's account must now be ranked among the best. In fact, if I had to select one set of the four Ballades, it would be this one. His renditions of the First and Third are hands-down winners. Where Zimerman can be so moving yet so frustrating in his sometimes quirky interpretive mannerisms (try the Third Ballade, beginning at 4:40, where he plays the climactic emotional outpouring with a curiously deadening softness at the outset), Kissin doesn't disappoint, owing to his innate sense for drama and flow, and to his intelligent phrasing. In fact, he not only never misses the interpretive boat in these four works, but rarely is he ever less than utterly convincing throughout. His tempos, for instance, always seem so right, so perfect, yet without ever sounding middle-of-the-road, and nothing in any performance ever even hints at the neutralizing air of calculation or nonchalance. In the other pieces here, Kissin displays the same high artistry: the Barcarolle brims with passion and beauty, the Scherzo effervesces with wit and grace, and the Berceuse charms and mesmerizes in its delicacies. Of course, dozens of pianists have traveled these highways as well, but Kissin's versions are distinguished and competitive with the best. RCA provides excellent sound. This is a classic recital disc!© TiVo
