Brahms: Piano Concerto No. 2, Op. 83 & Klavierstücke, Op. 76

Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra

Classical - Released March 15, 2010 | Warner Classics

Booklet
This disc confirms Nicholas Angelich's reputation as the greatest Brahms player of his generation. The pianist's previous recordings of music by the great German Romantic, collections of solo piano music, chamber music, and the First Piano Concerto, were all magnificent, and this recording of the Second Piano Concerto with Paavo Järvi leading the Frankfurt Radio Symphony plus the Klavierstücke, Op. 76, is at the same level. But the performances here are so magisterial, so authoritative, and so wholly and completely as one with the music that they irrefutably establish Angelich's supremacy in this repertoire. Angelich is a great Brahms player because of his rich tone, subtle touch, robust sense of rhythm, dramatic sense of form, and exactly the right balance between expressivity and reserve. In the Piano Concerto, this means a vigorous opening Allegro non troppo, a propulsive Allegro appassionato, a tender Andante, and a wholly beguiling closing Allegretto grazioso. In the Klavierstücke, it means sense, sensitivity, and soulfulness like we haven't heard in these pieces since the glory days of Backhaus, Kempff, and Fischer. Recorded in warmly detailed and beautifully balanced sound, this disc is as good as it gets in this world.© TiVo

L'Ile Enchantée

Capriccio Stravagante Orchestra

Classical - Released July 20, 2004 | Alpha Classics

Even by the supremely high production standards of Alpha recordings, this issue is especially splendid. Entitled Versailles, L'ile enchantée, it fully lives up to its name. As directed by Skip Sempé, the widely varied program features music written for Louis XIV's pleasure palace, performed by the Capriccio Stravagante Orchestra with mezzo soprano Guillemette Laurens and bass violist Jay Bernfeld. Each work is superbly selected, and every performance is absolutely idiomatic and wonderfully alive. There is wit and tenderness and elegance and, yes, nobility to their performances, which taken together form as much a portrait of the Sun King as the palace of Versailles itself. As organized into eight Divertissements, Sempé's choices range from the grand Ouverture de Psyché by Lully to the intimate Mes Yeux by Campra, from the soulful Les Voix Humaines by Marais to the massive Passacaille in C by Louis Couperin. As captured in the evocative photographs by Jean-Baptiste Leroux and reproduced in Alpha's superlative program book, Versailles looks every bit as beautiful as this disc sounds. Anyone who loves Baroque music, particularly French Baroque music, will love this disc.© TiVo

Fauré: Intégrale de l'œuvre pour piano, Vol. 1 (Ballade, Mazurka op.62, Quatre Valses-Caprices, Préludes Op.103

Jean-Claude Pennetier

Classical - Released May 12, 2009 | Mirare

Booklet
Though Fauré was assuredly his own man as a composer, in these performances of his piano music by Jean-Claude Pennetier, he is also surely the rightful heir of Chopin. The formal matter here is clearly Chopin's -- a ballade, a mazurka, four waltzes, and nine preludes -- and the stylistic manner is Chopin's as well -- the filigree and melody in the right hand and the left hand divided between counter-melody, chordal accompaniment and bass. This is meant as no slight to either Fauré or Pennetier. This is luscious music with toothsome melodies, succulent sonorities, and mouthwatering forms, and if these can be faulted for being too beautiful, it's a fault they should bear proudly. The performances are likewise exquisite. Pennetier has a fluent technique, a pearly tone, and an elegant way of phrasing a melody and shaping a form. But more than that, Pennetier has a real sympathy for Fauré's music and his interpretations are honest and heartfelt. Though the classic performances of these works are certainly worthy of admiration and love, Pennetier's are no less admirable and loveable and any listener interested in the composer or the period is urged to try this disc. Mirare's digital sound is clear, deep, and immediate. © TiVo
