Brahms: Ballades & Fantasies

Denis Kozhukhin

Solo Piano - Released February 1, 2017 | PentaTone

Hi-Res Booklet
Bold, turbulent defiance sit alongside pained introspection and bittersweet reverie in this penetrating recital of Brahms piano works by the acclaimed young Russian pianist Denis Kozhukhin in his eagerly awaited second recording for Pentatone. By turns placid, sparse, restive and impassioned, the highly personal and contemplative late piano pieces of Brahms have been described as “the mirrors of his soul”. The seven pieces comprising the Fantasias, Op. 116 are quite different in mood but are nevertheless intricately constructed to produce poetic miniatures of great depth and sonority, requiring sensitive artistry to convey their sense of unity and poignancy. Brahms is in a more full-bloodied and demonstrative mood with the four character pieces in the much earlier Ballades, Op 10. But these too show moments of transcendent beauty as in the closing ballade where the tenor melody is woven into the mellifluously undulating pianissimo accompaniment. And in the rarely heard Theme and Variations, Op. 18b, Brahms makes a sumptuous and instantly seductive arrangement of the second movement of his own String Sextet, producing an arresting and magisterial work with exquisite tone colorations and a hushed, sublime ending. “Technically flawless and musically imperious” wrote Classical Source of Denis Kozhukhin, “his detail and articulation was immaculate, and his daredevil playing was thrilling … Kozhukhin was a knockout.” (a Pentatone Introduction)

Brahms, Chopin

Jakub Kuszlik

Classical - Released February 4, 2022 | Polskie Radio

Hi-Res Booklet
Jakub Kuszelki is a polish pianist, Prize winner of the 18th International Piano Competition Frederic Chopin in 2021. On November 11, 2017, for the first time on the DAB Plus digital platform and on the Internet, the sounds of Fryderyk Chopin's music broadcast by Polish Radio Chopin were heard. Every year, on the eve of the November anniversary of this eighth public radio antenna, birthday concerts are organized. On November 10, 2021, at the Concert Studio of Witold Lutosławski, Jakub Kuszelik, winner of the fourth prize and the Polish Radio Special Prize for the best performance of mazurkas, in the Chopin Competition that ended only three weeks earlier, performed in the next anniversary concert. Extensive fragments of the recording of this November concert fill the currently presented debut solo album of Jakub Kuszlik. Before this just 25-year-old, talented pianist, a graduate of the Academy of Music. Feliks Nowowiejski in Bydgoszcz, in the class of prof. Katarzyna Popowa-Zydroń, the doors of many concert halls, not only in Poland, are just opening. The concert's repertoire included compositions by Fryderyk Chopin, including, of course, a series of awarded mazurkas. However, the program was extended to include compositions by Johannes Brahms. Their inclusion in the recital program is only at first glance not obvious in the context of Chopin's oeuvre. © Polskie Radio

Brahms: The Final Piano Pieces, Op. 116-119

Stephen Hough

Classical - Released January 3, 2020 | Hyperion

Hi-Res Booklet
By the early 1890s, Johannes Brahms began thinking that his career was approaching its end, perhaps because of his growing awareness of his mortality, due to the deaths of several close friends. In spite of that, encouragement from Brahms' publisher Fritz Simrock and a renewed burst of creativity brought about the major works of his final years, which included chamber pieces for clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld; a collection of arrangements of German Folk Songs; the Four Serious Songs; the 11 Chorale Preludes; and the piano pieces published as the Fantasias, Op. 116, the Intermezzos, Op. 117, the Clavierstücke, Op. 118, and the Clavierstücke, Op. 119. This group of 20 keyboard pieces collectively represent the autumnal and sometimes gloomy moods that dominated Brahms' thoughts in his last decade, and have even retroactively colored the overall character his music, suggesting a nostalgic attitude in his work as a whole. Yet there is a balance between melancholy and exuberance in Brahms, and while much can be made of the sorrowful events in his life that influenced him, particularly in the Intermezzos, Op. 117 (which he considered to be lullabies for his sorrows), expressions in the late piano music are artfully conceived and perhaps less a measure of Brahms' emotional state than of his genius. Stephen Hough has recorded Brahms' piano concertos, and some of the chamber works, but this 2019 Hyperion album is his first album since 2001 devoted to Brahms' solo piano works. At this stage of his career, Hough seems to have found the right approach to these character pieces, which can be just as fiery and passionate as they are sad or sentimental. However, just as important are their structures and formal designs, which show an active and lively imagination, especially in Brahms' use of chromatic harmony and his sometimes expansive treatment of the Romantic "miniature."© TiVo

Brahms: Piano Sonata Op. 5 & 7 Fantasien, Op. 116

Adam Laloum

Classical - Released October 1, 2021 | harmonia mundi

Hi-Res Booklet
After his recent Schubert album, Adam Laloum pays a visit to Brahms: the young prodigy of the early 1850s immediately established himself as the worthy heir of Beethoven and Schumann with his dazzling Sonata No. 3. Almost forty years later, we find him just as wild and in no way mellowed – quite the contrary: he continues to explore new horizons in his Fantasias Op. 116, where recollections of the old masters of the Classical keyboard mingle with incredibly modern intuitions. © harmonia mundi

Anna Zassimova invites us to a “virtual concert” in this two-part recital, programmed with her customary flair and originality. Anna Zassimova is internationally renowned for her many award-winning recordings and performances of the Romantic repertoire and of forgotten masterworks of the Russian repertoire. This is her second recording on the Melism label, following her acclaimed recital of Dvořák duets with Christophe Sirodeau. © Melism

Brahms: Fantasien, Op. 116, Intermezzi, Op. 117, Klavierstücke, Op. 118 & 119

Nicholas Angelich

Classical - Released January 15, 2007 | Warner Classics

In 2006, the year prior to the release of this two-disc set of Brahms' late piano music, young American pianist Nicholas Angelich released a single disc of Brahms' early piano music featuring the Ballads and the Paganini Variations. That disc was a marvel and a wonder -- comparisons with Richter and Kempff did not seem unreasonable -- but it was not as utterly beyond comprehension as this disc. True, Angelich's technique is as commanding and his tone is as variegated as before -- but Brahms' late piano music demands more of a pianist: it demands a depth of soul as well as a breadth of experience that a young performer could hardly be expected to possess. And yet, irrefutably, Angelich possesses that depth and breadth. The strength, tenderness, and especially the insatiable longing for all one's ever loved and lost is present in his performances, turning into sound the mysteries of Brahms' sorrow. It's true that Angelich does stretch tempos at times -- the Andante non troppo e con molto espressione from his Opus 117 Intermezzi is much slower than any andante conceivably could be -- but because of the compelling intensity of his interpretations, this only heightens the overall tension. Anyone who loves great Brahms' piano playing or just great piano playing should hear these performances. Virgin Classics' sound is rich, warm, and fine grained.© TiVo
