Bacchanale: Saint-Saëns et la Méditerranée

Orchestre Divertimento

Classical - Released March 24, 2023 | harmonia mundi

Hi-Res
The Orchestre Divertimento and its conductor, Zahia Ziouani, often juxtapose European repertory with music from other parts of the world. Ziouani, who is of Algerian background, has a particular interest in the music of that country. She could not have found a composer whose works were more congenial to such a project than Camille Saint-Saëns, who visited Algeria no fewer than 18 times and composed a Suite algérienne, Op. 60, that is heard here, broken up and interspersed with Arabic music. What makes Ziouani's project unique is that there are not two types of music here but three. Many of the Saint-Saëns works are preceded by improvisations in the classical Arabic idiom, on oud, qanun, a traditional viol, derbouka, and the riqq drum. These are quite a musical distance from Saint-Saëns, but Ziouani introduces contemporary Arabic songs, of a semi-popular nature, as an intermediate step. The sets are mostly in related tonalities. This is an ingenious idea that sheds light on both Saint-Saëns, on what he heard when he heard Algerian music, and on the nature of contemporary popular traditions that are rooted in the classical music of the world. The Saint-Saëns performances themselves are entirely creditable, and the album is well recorded at a couple of different locations. A unique release that makes one want to hear more from this distinctive ensemble. © James Manheim /TiVo

Brahms : Intermezzi, Rhapsodies

François Chaplin

Classical - Released June 14, 2019 | Aparté

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions 5 de Diapason
Following a previous recording devoted to Mozart, François Chaplin has chosen Brahms' latest opus for solo piano: Rhapsodies Op. 79 and the intermezzi from Klavierstücke Op. 117 and Op. 118. The Rhapsodies, moving and powerful scores, express Brahms' sober melancholy. Far from his symphonic works, the interludes of Opus 117 and Opus 118, true miniatures, reveal the inner imagination of the composer. Brahms talks directly to the heart of the listener with his mature and sober poetry. Within these Klavierstücke, the interlude is a humble but generous genre where the musician gathers freely the fruits of his most intimate inspiration. These « lullabies of pain », as he called them, are composed during summer in the Austrian countryside, dear to this sturdy northern German. The emotion that emerges from it is all the more intense as it measures his artistic evolution. On this journey, François Chaplin brings out a soft poetry from a contained lyricism. © Aparté

12 Stradivari

Janine Jansen

Classical - Released September 10, 2021 | Decca Music Group Ltd.

Hi-Res Booklet
It must have been an amazing dream come true for Janine Jansen to play twelve of the finest Stradivarius violins made available to her for ten days or so to record this album, and to have it filmed by Gerry Fox in London. Ten days to master these precious gems is certainly a very short time, even if the outcome is preserved forever by this documentary available online in late 2021.The twelve precious instruments travelled from all over the world to realise this whimsical project. Some of these twelve "Strads" lifted from their museum display cases have not been played for decades, others belong or have belonged to legendary virtuosi, and some have probably never been recorded. It was then necessary to devise a programme that would best illustrate the characteristics and personality of the individual violins. The rather original choices eschew Bach, which Janine Jansen plays so well, to focus on a dozen composers perhaps not all the most obvious: Falla, Tchaikovsky, Kreisler, Schumann, Brahms, Elgar, Vieuxtemps, Rachmaninov, Szymanovski, Ravel, Suk and Heuberger. There is no need to look for coherence here, but just to appreciate the sound of each instrument which, we have to admit, represents a real challenge for a non-specialist audience. Antonio Pappano, as good a pianist as he is  conductor,  uses a wide range of sounds to enhance these twelve vignettes, original pieces or arrangements of famous works. © François Hudry/Qobuz
