Letter(s) to Erik Satie

Bertrand Chamayou

Classical - Released September 1, 2023 | Warner Classics

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions Diapason d'or - Choc de Classica
John Cage's admiration for the music of Erik Satie is well known; Cage organized a Satie festival early in his career, and even casual listeners will detect a spirit of experimentation and a certain irreverence common to the two. Perhaps no one has explored the relationship in greater detail than pianist Bertrand Chamayou on this 2023 release, which hit classical best-seller lists in the autumn of that year. There are several real finds here. One is a rare Cage piece, All Sides of the Small Stone, that was actually dedicated to Satie's memory, and another is a work by Satie specialist James Tenney, Three Pages in the Shape of a Pear (In Celebration of Erik Satie), which suggests lines along which this compositional axis might be extended. In the main body of the program, Chamayou balances Satie and Cage nicely, picking some Cage works that sound quite a bit like Satie and tying the development of the prepared piano closely to these. This is a fresh interpretation. The overall effect has both charm and humor, qualities that aren't always associated with Cage. However, after hearing this album, listeners will feel that maybe they should be. Chamayou has, up to now, been better known for mainstream French and German repertory, but this release reveals him as a talented interpreter of 20th century music as well.© James Manheim /TiVo

Messiaen: Vingt Regards sur l'Enfant-Jésus

Bertrand Chamayou

Classical - Released June 3, 2022 | Warner Classics

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions OPUS Klassik
© Warner Classics

Saint-Saëns : Piano Concertos Nos 2, 5 & Piano Works

Bertrand Chamayou

Classical - Released August 3, 2018 | Warner Classics

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions 4F de Télérama - Gramophone Record of the Year - Choc de Classica
For French pianists who don't approach the task in a sympathetic spirit, the nearly obligatory early-career Saint-Saëns recital can seem a chore, for both pianist and listener. Not a bit of it here. Pianist Bertrand Chamayou and the Orchestre National de France under Emmanuel Krivine absolutely nail the Piano Concerto No. 2, Op. 22, with a performance notable for its combination of small detail and energy. Saint-Saëns is sometimes criticized, and indeed sometimes rightly, for being a by-the-book conservatory composer, but what to make of the unusual shape of this concerto, with its Allegro middle movement and lack of a true slow movement? Sample that middle movement, which is overflowing with melody, or the solo passage at the very beginning of the concerto, exquisitely carved out by Chamayou. The Piano Concerto No. 5, Op. 103 ("Egyptian"), with its supposedly authentic Nile tribal melody in the slow movement, is suitably colorful and exotic, and there are also gems among the rarely played small piano works that close out the program. The Etude, Op. 52, No. 6 ("En forme de valse"), which is just what it says, in the form of a waltz, but not quite a waltz, is an inspired choice. Chamayou tackles the various technical challenges with aplomb, and Erato contributes unfussy sound from a pair of sessions at the Radio France Auditorium. As good a place as any to start with the piano music of Saint-Saëns.© TiVo

Good Night !

Bertrand Chamayou

Classical - Released October 9, 2020 | Warner Classics

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions Diapason d'or
Pianist Bertrand Chamayou's Good Night! takes its title from one of the numbers of Leoš Janáček's From an Overgrown Path, which opens the program. It's appropriate, for the entire program consists of works capturing the moment when sleep comes. They go by the names of lullaby, berceuse, wiegenlied, and more, but they have are consistent in tone, and listeners in search of an album with which to unwind and even to fall asleep to will be satisfied here. The program is very artfully constructed so as to deepen the mood with each piece. (That is, until Helmut Lachenmann's Wiegenmusik, a modernist work that may wake one right up again.) There are some familiar examples of the genre from Liszt, Brahms (the "Brahms Lullaby," in an arrangement by Max Reger), and Chopin, but also lesser-known works by Sergei Lyapunov, the worth-knowing female composer Mel Bonis, and Bryce Dessner, whose entrancing Song for Octave confirms that he has moved definitively beyond being included on programs simply to draw in rock music fans. However, it's Chamayou's playing that ties the whole thing together; he keeps the music at a low but constant intensity and has remarkable control throughout. This is an ideal gift for those with a new baby, or really for anyone else.© TiVo

Ravel: Complete Works for Solo Piano

Bertrand Chamayou

Classical - Released January 15, 2016 | Erato - Warner Classics

Booklet
Bertrand Chamayou's previous recordings have been devoted to 19th century keyboard music, focusing on pieces by Franz Liszt, Felix Mendelssohn, Frédéric Chopin, and other composers of the period. That makes this double CD of the solo piano music of Maurice Ravel a welcome surprise, because Chamayou is as adept in this early modern fare as he is in the works of the Romantics. The complete solo piano pieces are gathered here, along with a tribute by Alfredo Casella, À la manière de... Ravel, and Alexander Siloti's piano transcription of Kaddish from Ravel's Deux mélodies hébraïques. Chamayou's virtuosity is abundantly displayed in the dazzling Alborada del gracioso from Miroirs and the fiendishly difficult Scarbo from Gaspard de la nuit, to name but two examples, though the less showy pieces reveal him to be a master of subdued expression. The beloved Pavane pour une infante défunte is not a flashy showpiece, but Chamayou plays with such refined shading and delicate tone colors that it becomes a demonstration of his controlled touch and subtle use of dynamics. Erato's reproduction is clean and vivid, capturing every sparkling detail.© TiVo

Debussy: Sonatas and Piano Trio

Bertrand Chamayou

Classical - Released November 3, 2017 | Warner Classics

Booklet
The program for this album of Debussy's chamber music is unusual: except for the enchanting Syrinx, for solo flute, all the pieces are written in the classical chamber music forms. Only in the realm of chamber music did Debussy do this, and hearing a group of such works together on the same bill is of considerable interest. Here Debussy could not get away without modulating, but the balance among texture, harmonic field, and fixed, sonata-like forms shift in fascinating ways. The program doesn't allow a single instrumentalist to come to the fore, but perhaps this is for the good. All of these pieces are late Debussy works. The three works designated as sonatas were part of the unfinished Six Sonatas for Various Instruments, and they may be regarded as individual explorations of a larger theme; the performances here are consistent and attractive. Sample the Sonata for flute, viola, and harp, both for the delightfully unpredictable harp part and its graceful realization by Marie-Pieere Langlamet, and for the superlative engineering work in Paris' Salle Colonne (the Cello Sonata, Violin Sonata, and Piano Trio were recorded elsewhere, but the level is uniformly high and the sound consistent). Highly recommended.© TiVo
