Bellini: Il Pirata

Vincenzo Bellini

Opera - Released November 19, 2021 | Prima Classic

Download not available
Carried off by an intestinal perforation at the age of 33 in Puteaux, at the gates of Paris, this son of Catania is still greatly appreciated in his native city, where this new studio recording of Il pirata, Vincenzo Bellini's first major opera, first performed at La Scala in Milan in 1827, was made. With this work, the young Sicilian author distanced himself from the Rossinian style then in vogue by giving free rein to his incomparable melodic verve.Chopin's unbounded admiration for Bellini is well known, and the melodic contours of his music ripple through the works of the Polish composer, who was not an admirer of too many other people. The Pirate is full of superb melodies, such as Imogene's aria 'Lo sognai ferito' in the first act, Gualtiero's cantilena 'Pietosa al padre' and the last scene of the work, whose instrumental introduction presages Norma's famous 'Casta diva'.Recorded in the summer of 2020 at the Teatro Sangiorgi in Catania, a recently restored old Liberty style theatre, this new version, vigorously conducted by Fabrizio Maria Carminati at the head of the Orchestra e Coro del Teatro Massimo Bellini in Catania, is distinguished by its absolute completeness, with all the repeats, original cadenzas and variations written by the singers, and with its rarely performed Finale.Latvian soprano Marina Rebeka reigns supreme over this recording released by Prima Classic, her own label. Alongside this immense bel canto, Javier Camarena was needed to overcome the extraordinary difficulties of a score that is not sparing of those vocal effects and top notes that can enchant an entire hall. A bel canto specialising in the works of Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti, the Mexican tenor triumphs on the great stages of the world, especially at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where he is one of the very few singers to be recalled to the stage. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Opera - Released August 20, 2021 | Delos

Hi-Res Booklet
This stellar production features a pair of operatic superstars, namely tenor Lawrence Brownlee and soprano supreme Sarah Coburn, who continually appear in the lead roles in top houses worldwide. In June 2021, Orbelian was named Music Director and Principal Conductor of New York City Opera. Fauré: Requiem - Poulenc: Figure Humaine - Debussy: 3 Chansons

Mathieu Romano

Masses, Passions, Requiems - Released March 1, 2019 | Aparté

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions 4F de Télérama
Fauré's Requiem, “funeral lullaby” written for enjoyment as the composer put it, has a unique place in history. It's soft, simple and modest poetry conveys moments of gentle contemplation and moving expressiveness which are entrusted to both the choir and the two soloists. With his Ensemble Aedes and the orchestra Les Siècles, Mathieu Romano is committed to render a Requiem faithful to its first performance. We hear thus the score in its original 1893 orchestration, where the organ plays a great role, and where Latin is pronounced in the French way as it used to be. The clearest articulation of the Ensemble Aedes then perfectly fits Éluard’s Figure humaine set to music by Francis Poulenc. We have never heard these sublime poems sung with such intelligibility before! Finally, the three Songs by Debussy elegantly close the album. Here again, the quality and clarity of the voices are stunning. Artistic director and founder of Ensemble Aedes has established himself as a magician of voices in a cappella scores. And voices ideally melt with the strings of Les Siècles under his baton. A 100% French cast in a 100% French music disc for a triple rediscovery. Essential! © Aparté

Verdi: Attila (Live)

Munich Radio Orchestra

Opera - Released May 1, 2020 | BR-Klassik

Hi-Res Booklet
Verdi strongly adhered to Italian patriotism and Attila is one of his works that goes to show it. A drama with a particularly inventive melodic invention, it aptly confronts the barbarian Attila, not devoid of greatness and humanity, the Roman general Ezio with his ambiguous character (“You will have the universe; but let Italy remain mine”) and the allegorical figure Odabella, an emblem of the Italian female fighters. Attila contains some major pages heralding the great works of maturity, especially in Attila’s scene and the grand finale of the first act. In this work and like so many others, Verdi carries his political ideas into an epic and national drama. Recorded during a concert at the Prince Regent Theatre in Munich on October 13, 2019, this production features the dark, deep voice of Italian bass baritone Ildebrando d’Archangelo, facing the powerful Ukrainian soprano Liudmyla Monastyrska, whose sharp style and impressive vocal abilities transfigure the Verdian melodies. Sicilian tenor Stefano La Colla en Foresto and Romanian baritone George Petean complete a motley but perfectly balanced cast. A special mention goes to the Bavarian Radio Choir, who bring a luxurious note to the Verdian drama conducted here by the Croatian conductor Ivan Repušić, marking his induction concert to his new position as Music Director of the Munich Radio Orchestra. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Mio caro Händel

Simone Kermes

Classical - Released February 8, 2019 | Sony Classical

Hi-Res Booklet
While the German soprano follows in the footsteps of Cecilia Bartoli, her virtuoso voice separates her fans from the purists who prefer a less fanciful vocal-line. This long-awaited new album from Simone Kermes shows off her masterful voice in almost every register and there is no sign of the excessiveness for which she has previously been criticised. Typically referred to as a “Ba-rock” star, some people are irritated by her gestures and extreme theatrics during her concerts, but those mannerisms are long forgotten here in the absence of any images. The title of the album, “Mio caro Händel”, says a lot about the affinity Simone Kermes feels with the Saxon composer. She has selected his most popular pieces, such as Ombra mai fù(Largo of Love), Piangeró la sorte mia(I will lament my fate) and Lascia ch’io pianga(Let me weep), along with some much less well-known pieces, which are some of the most wonderful revelations and rare musical gems on the album. The singer recorded this testimony of love to Händel in Berlin’s famous Jesus-Christus-Kirche in 2018 accompanied by Amici Veneziani, an ensemble put together especially for her which mostly comprises of German musicians and is led by Russian violinist Boris Begelman. As a great traveller who went all over Europe, this captures Händel’s European spirit perfectly. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Verdi

Ludovic Tezier

Classical - Released February 5, 2021 | Sony Classical

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions Diapason d'or / Arte
It was time for Ludovic Tézier to finally provide his admirers with a recital. His performances as a Verdian baritone are impressive: Rigoletto, Simon Boccanegra, Falstaff, Giorgio Germont (La Traviata), Posa (Don Carlo), Le Conte De Luna (Il Trovatore), Renato (Un ballo in maschera), Iago (Otello). And almost all of these are reprised in this solo album. To this impressive list of stage roles, Tézier brings the welcome addition of arias from Ernani, Macbeth and Nabucco all accompanied by Frédéric Chaslin at the head of the orchestra of the Teatro Comunale in Bologna. It was in 1998 in Tel Aviv that the French baritone played his first Verdian role. He was thirty years old when he was Ford in a production of Falstaff. "There is an absolutely fascinating energy in Verdi, both for the audience and for the singers", he admits. "His roles are usually very challenging, but his music acts at the same time as a fountain of youth. Verdi is brimming with vitality, which is what allowed me to return to the stage just two days after my father's death". Now with a fully-matured voice, Ludovic Tézier is in demand all over the world for his Verdi roles. He is one of the best performers of Verdi's work, standing alongside the late Piero Cappuccilli who remains his great role model. This record offers timely confirmation of his stature. © François Hudry/Qobuz
