Fauré: Intégrale de l'œuvre pour piano, Vol. 1 (Ballade, Mazurka op.62, Quatre Valses-Caprices, Préludes Op.103

Jean-Claude Pennetier

Classical - Released May 12, 2009 | Mirare

Booklet
Though Fauré was assuredly his own man as a composer, in these performances of his piano music by Jean-Claude Pennetier, he is also surely the rightful heir of Chopin. The formal matter here is clearly Chopin's -- a ballade, a mazurka, four waltzes, and nine preludes -- and the stylistic manner is Chopin's as well -- the filigree and melody in the right hand and the left hand divided between counter-melody, chordal accompaniment and bass. This is meant as no slight to either Fauré or Pennetier. This is luscious music with toothsome melodies, succulent sonorities, and mouthwatering forms, and if these can be faulted for being too beautiful, it's a fault they should bear proudly. The performances are likewise exquisite. Pennetier has a fluent technique, a pearly tone, and an elegant way of phrasing a melody and shaping a form. But more than that, Pennetier has a real sympathy for Fauré's music and his interpretations are honest and heartfelt. Though the classic performances of these works are certainly worthy of admiration and love, Pennetier's are no less admirable and loveable and any listener interested in the composer or the period is urged to try this disc. Mirare's digital sound is clear, deep, and immediate. © TiVo

Boëllmann: Symphonie en fa majeur, Variations symphoniques & Quatre pièces brèves

Orchestre Symphonique de Mulhouse

Classical - Released July 2, 2021 | Fuga Libera

Hi-Res Booklet
Léon Boëllmann’s Suite gothique, with its suave Prière à Notre-Dame and its spirited Toccata, rapidly became a beloved war-horse of organists throughout the world and gained the composer great renown. The Suite’s fame, however, caused other works by Boëllmann — who had been born in the same year as Debussy and who died in the same year as Brahms — to be forgotten. Patrick Davin chose to present Boëllmann’s symphonic works on this recording, the last he was to make before his untimely death. © Fuga Libera

Maestro: Music by Leonard Bernstein

London Symphony Orchestra

Classical - Released November 17, 2023 | Deutsche Grammophon (DG)

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions Qobuz Album of the Week
The tale of American composer Leonard Bernstein is at the centre of the film Maestro, released in September 2023 on Netflix and starring Bradley Cooper. The biopic retraces the immense career of a man who first became familiar with classical composers like Schumann, Strauss, and Beethoven, before skyrocketing to worldwide fame as Broadway’s star composer. Musical theatre, film music, ballets, symphonic works…this musical eclecticism is transcribed in the soundtrack for Maestro, created by one of his greatest fans, conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin of Québec. Much of the music features Bernstein’s own works, such as “On the Town” (1944) and “Fancy Free” (1944), as well as “West Side Story” (1957) and “Mass” (1971). The album also includes the likes of Mahler and Beethoven, composers that greatly influenced Bernstein: the legendary 1973 “Symphony No. 2 ‘Resurrection’” concert with the London Symphony Orchestra is presented in the film, conducted by director and lead actor Bradley Cooper, who reincarnates this legend of 20th-century music. © Lena Germann/Qobuz

Debussy & Ravel: String Quartets

Jerusalem Quartet

Classical - Released April 20, 2018 | harmonia mundi

Hi-Res Booklet
The French label harmonia mundi has pulled out all the stops for the 2018 commemoration of the centenary of the death of Claude Debussy, by asking their "house" artists to record the works of the great French composer. Cultural ambassadors for Israel (not always an easy job), the Jerusalem Quartet was created in 1996 and quickly became known as one of the foremost ensembles of the genre, thanks to the power of their playing, the warmth of their performances, and a particularly dense and sensual instrumental colour. Their recordings – thirteen albums for the harmonia mundi label – regularly win awards and critical acclaim in the press. This new recording of the quartets by Debussy and Ravel (a now-classic pairing which seems to have decreed that the two bodies of work will be joined at the hip, even though their authors neither wanted nor observed such a kinship) clearly towers above an already-ample discography. Velvety sounds, dreamy poetry (a marvellous Andantino from Debussy's Quartet), unbridled wildness and youthful energy are all brought into this subtly-treated party, where flowery sentiments mingle as in a novel by Marcel Proust. © François Hudry/Qobuz
