Le chant du violoncelle

Edouardo Torbianelli

Classical - Released November 20, 2020 | Paraty

Hi-Res Booklet
Chopin and Franchomme’s collaboration and sincere friendship rested on a double understanding : they were linked both by a communion of feeling, so precious to the Polish exile in the Paris mondain of the time, and an artistic symbiosis that fed both on an affinity in the mastery of their instrument, and on the sharing of such basic musical values as authenticity, simplicity, elegance, and nobility of expression. Edoardo Torbianelli and Fernando Caida-Greco first played together in 2000 as a trio formation, with the violinist Amandine Beyer, within the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. Their collaboration led to a musical dialogue based on extensive research, with a particular focus on the Romantic repertoire, revisited in the light of the aesthetic and technical knowledge acquired over 20 years of research. © Paraty

Field : Nocturnes

Florent Albrecht

Solo Piano - Released September 17, 2021 | HORTUS

Hi-Res Booklet
“Unprecedented” is the right word to sum up this album entirely devoted to John Field's Nocturnes. Unprecedented because it is the first recording by Florent Albrecht, an extra-terrestrial of the pianoforte, who trained late in life after a first career in the luxury goods industry. After graduating from the Conservatoire of Geneva in 2018 and laureate of the Royaumont Foundation the same year, the French pianist has already performed at the Paris Opera and the Juilliard School, among others. An unprecedented album, as it features the world premiere of Nocturne in B flat major, posthumous Op.142, a score exhumed from the shelves of the St Petersburg library by Florent Albrecht. For the occasion, Qobuz presents this original and enchanting album exclusively for five weeks. The nocturne, a form made popular by Chopin, emerged at a time in the history of music when technical improvements in keyboard instruments enabled them to rival the expressiveness of the human voice. We do not know if it is John Field's writing talent or Florent Albrecht's fluid and airy playing—it is probably a subtle mixture of the two—but we come away from listening being convinced that the piano is the sole instrument capable of expressing the emotions of the romantic soul. The musician opts for a phrasing that is both clear and supple, perfectly suited to his instrument (a Carlo Meglio from 1826), whose rounded and slightly trembling timbre, sometimes close to a cimbalom, acts like a soothing balm for the soul. A truly calming interlude. © Pierre Lamy/Qobuz

Fauré: Intégrale de l'œuvre pour piano, Vol. 1 (Ballade, Mazurka op.62, Quatre Valses-Caprices, Préludes Op.103

Jean-Claude Pennetier

Classical - Released May 12, 2009 | Mirare

Booklet
Though Fauré was assuredly his own man as a composer, in these performances of his piano music by Jean-Claude Pennetier, he is also surely the rightful heir of Chopin. The formal matter here is clearly Chopin's -- a ballade, a mazurka, four waltzes, and nine preludes -- and the stylistic manner is Chopin's as well -- the filigree and melody in the right hand and the left hand divided between counter-melody, chordal accompaniment and bass. This is meant as no slight to either Fauré or Pennetier. This is luscious music with toothsome melodies, succulent sonorities, and mouthwatering forms, and if these can be faulted for being too beautiful, it's a fault they should bear proudly. The performances are likewise exquisite. Pennetier has a fluent technique, a pearly tone, and an elegant way of phrasing a melody and shaping a form. But more than that, Pennetier has a real sympathy for Fauré's music and his interpretations are honest and heartfelt. Though the classic performances of these works are certainly worthy of admiration and love, Pennetier's are no less admirable and loveable and any listener interested in the composer or the period is urged to try this disc. Mirare's digital sound is clear, deep, and immediate. © TiVo
