New Jersey

Bon Jovi

Rock - Released September 19, 1988 | Island Records (The Island Def Jam Music Group / Universal Music)

Hi-Res
Bon Jovi had perfected a formula for hard pop/rock by the time of New Jersey, concentrating on singalong choruses sung over and over again, frequently by a rough, extensively overdubbed chorus, producing an effect not unlike what these songs sounded like in the arenas and stadiums where they were most often heard. The lyrics had that typical pop twist -- although they nominally expressed romantic commitment, sentiments such as "Lay Your Hands on Me" and "I'll Be There for You" worked equally well as a means for the band and its audience to reaffirm their affection for each other. The only thing that marred the perfection of this communion was Jon Bon Jovi's continuing obsession with a certain predecessor from his home state; at times, he seemed to be trying to re-create Born to Run using cheaper materials.© William Ruhlmann /TiVo

Gravel & Gold

Dierks Bentley

Country - Released February 24, 2023 | Capitol Records Nashville

Hi-Res
Dierks Bentley treats Gravel & Gold as something of a victory lap, celebrating the 20th anniversary of his 2003 debut album by demonstrating all the different kinds of country music he can do. Gravel & Gold is anchored with the kind of surging, arena-filling country that is his signature, but Bentley finds plenty of space for poignant ballads, bluegrass, and jokes where part of the pleasure is that you see the punchline coming. Bentley knows how to deliver clever spins on country clichés, such as the weary travelogue of "Heartbreak Drinking Tour" or when turning a tune about a truck into a love song. Bentley doesn't shy away from the fact that he's serving up a familiar recipe: he opens the album with "Same Ole Me," an acknowledgment that there are effectively no surprises on Gravel & Gold. Familiarity doesn't always breed contempt, though. Throughout the record, Bentley sounds relaxed and cozy in his comfort zone, and that sense of ease, when combined with the occasional barn burner, such as the jocular bluegrass closer "High Note" -- a bluegrass jam complete with cameos by Billy Strings, Charlie Worsham, Sam Bush, and Jerry Douglas -- is a recipe for a good time.© Stephen Thomas Erlewine /TiVo

mama's boy

LANY

Pop - Released February 5, 2021 | Polydor Records

Hi-Res
Like a campfire beneath a twinkling desert sky, LANY's third set Mama's Boy sparkles to life with warm atmospheric production and earthy Americana-inspired twang. Coming two years after their neon sophomore album, Malibu Nights, Mama's Boy is a subdued, comforting affair that sounds almost like the Killers tackling acoustic worship music. From "Cowboy in LA" to "Paper," it's as if the trio decided make a full genre pivot -- they even dip into gospel on "I Still Talk to Jesus" -- before things eventually pick up a bit on the latter half of the album. The synth-washed pop of "Bad News" and "When You're Drunk" offer the polished '80s-revival vibes of the 1975, while "Good Guys" comes closest to their typical pop style. Intimate, sensitive, and unabashedly vulnerable, Mama's Boy is far and away their quietest and most introverted affair to date, yet it adds a depth and substance to LANY's catalog that had been lacking from their usual feel-good Gen Z anthems.© Neil Z. The first release since his publicized spell in prison, Michto is the second full-length album from controversial French street rapper Seth Gueko.
