The Swingle Singers' scat vocal jazz swing arrangements of Johann Sebastian Bach classics were among their most popular material, particularly in Europe (where they actually enjoyed some chart success in the U.K.). Accompanied by nothing more than double bass and drums, the octet distributed their vocal parts equally among two sopranos, two altos, two tenors, and two basses, favoring brisk tempos. Occasionally, indeed, they were so brisk they verged on hyperventilation, as on "Prelude No. 1 in C Major" and the version of "Fugue No. 5 in D Major" drawn from "The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1." They do slow things down once in a while on numbers like "Aria" (from the composer's "Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major") and parts of "Sinfonia," which tend to tilt the mood a little more toward the classical. The album's inventive but a little white bread in its relentlessly wholesome, upbeat tone. Pop fans might hear echoes of the Swingle Singers' work, whether direct or coincidental, in the harmonies of artists like the Association and the Beach Boys, and a U.K. rock group, the Belfast Gypsies, a spinoff of Them, actually based its "Aria of the Fallen Angels" on the Swingle Singers' reading of "Aria" on this album.© TiVo

Bach: Inventions & Sinfonias

Zhu Xiao-Mei

Classical - Released October 30, 2015 | Accentus Music

The Inventions and Sinfonias of Johann Sebastian Bach are essential training pieces for young pianists, so they are quite well-known, though somewhat less venerated than the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Goldberg Variations, and the Art of the Fugue, which are regarded as much more challenging and lofty. Yet Zhu Xiao-Mei's recording on Accentus Music demonstrates that these are not mere exercises or easy pieces for beginners, but artistically challenging works in their own right, in which every choice is evident in the exposed two-part and three-part counterpoint. This album was recorded in the Mendelssohn Room at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, which has lively acoustics that complement Zhu's playing without drowning her sound or taking the edge off her crisp articulation. Listeners who prefer to hear these pieces played on harpsichord may not care for any performances on piano, but Zhu is so meticulous and precise in her execution, even a Bach purist can appreciate her skills and ability to make these pieces intellectually and emotionally satisfying. © TiVo

Bach Inspirations

Thibaut García

Classical - Released October 5, 2018 | Warner Classics

Booklet
Ever since the days of Andrés Segovia, albums related to Bach's music have come along often enough. This entry by the young French guitarist Thibaut Garcia has much to recommend it, and indeed Segovia seems to have exerted a strong influence on Garcia's tone, self-possessed but sensuous. It doesn't get any better than the opening La catedral of Paraguayan composer Agustín Barrios, whose music is thankfully becoming more widely exposed: Garcia is arresting here. He's also very strong in his duets with soprano Elsa Dreisig, the Ave Maria of Gounod and the Aria from Villa-Lobos' Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 (sample the Gounod, where Dreisig veritably seems suspended above Garcia's guitar clouds). Grouped with these may be the lovely arrangement of the Bach Chaconne from the Partita for solo violin in D minor, an arrangement, like that of the Gounod, by Garcia himself. A good deal of space is given over to Polish-French composer Alexandre Tansman, who wrote music along various interesting neoclassic lines. The Inventions (Hommage à Bach) and Pièce en forme de Passacaille suggested themselves probably because they were written (but never performed) by Segovia; they are less neoclassic pieces than almost Bach knockoffs, and Garcia can do less with them than with the other pieces here. Stronger is the Suite Brève of Dusan Bogdanovic, innovatively expanding the Bach model in both harmonic and rhythmic directions; the return to familiar pieces by Bach at the conclusion after these has a strong impact. Erato's engineers, working in the Salle des concerts de Arras, achieve superb results, and the little-heralded Orchestre Nationale de Montpellier Occitane enters into the spirit of the thing. Photogenic, talented, and original, Garcia is plainly a young guitarist to watch.© TiVo

Bach: Inventions & Partita

Janine Jansen

Classical - Released January 1, 2007 | Decca Music Group Ltd.

Listeners looking for an exercise in virtuosity may find Janine Jansen's 2007 Bach recording a disappointment; the serious nature of the program precludes showboating. But listeners hoping that Jansen had more musical individuality to offer than was revealed in her early recordings of standard violin showpieces may find this recording a wonderful surprise. In the Inventions, Jansen is an equal partner with violist Maxim Rysanov and cellist Torleif Thedéen in performances of wit, feeling, and subtle grace. In the Partita and especially its excruciatingly ecstatic Chaconne, Jansen delivers consummate musicality and surpassing emotional honesty. Decca's sound is close and evocative.© TiVo

J.S. Bach: Clavichord

András Schiff

Solo Piano - Released January 27, 2023 | ECM New Series

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions Diapason d'or
It took András Schiff over 40 years to acquire his first clavichord, but the long wait was worth it. His love for the harpsichord's ‘little sister’ began in the late 1960s, when Schiff met the English pianist, organist, composer and conductor Georg Malcolm: ‘He showed me how to play Bach's polyphony with my fingers alone, without using the sustain pedal’.Unlike the harpsichord or piano, a note (string) played on the clavichord resonates for as long as the key is held down. As a result, playing this instrument is unique in that you can influence the sound even after a key has been struck, allowing for techniques such as vibrato.Historically, the clavichord was widely used as a practice instrument and a composition aid, and it was often only played in front of small groups. This doesn’t detract from its importance and significance, however, as evidenced by its frequent use by composers such as Bach.András Schiff takes to this intimate, personal instrument to offer recordings which— together with those of Friedrich Gulda or Gustav Leonhardt—constitute one of the rare complete recordings of Bach's keyboard music for clavichord. He performs the Inventions, Sinfonias, Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue BWV 903, among others, with dedication and precision, and he’s not afraid to put his own mark on the music. Schiff tends to be less known for his historical performances, but he astonishes here with an impressive recording in which he remains true to himself and to Bach. © Lena Germann/Qobuz

Bacchanale: Saint-Saëns et la Méditerranée

Orchestre Divertimento

Classical - Released March 24, 2023 | harmonia mundi

Hi-Res
The Orchestre Divertimento and its conductor, Zahia Ziouani, often juxtapose European repertory with music from other parts of the world. Ziouani, who is of Algerian background, has a particular interest in the music of that country. She could not have found a composer whose works were more congenial to such a project than Camille Saint-Saëns, who visited Algeria no fewer than 18 times and composed a Suite algérienne, Op. 60, that is heard here, broken up and interspersed with Arabic music. What makes Ziouani's project unique is that there are not two types of music here but three. Many of the Saint-Saëns works are preceded by improvisations in the classical Arabic idiom, on oud, qanun, a traditional viol, derbouka, and the riqq drum. These are quite a musical distance from Saint-Saëns, but Ziouani introduces contemporary Arabic songs, of a semi-popular nature, as an intermediate step. The sets are mostly in related tonalities. This is an ingenious idea that sheds light on both Saint-Saëns, on what he heard when he heard Algerian music, and on the nature of contemporary popular traditions that are rooted in the classical music of the world. The Saint-Saëns performances themselves are entirely creditable, and the album is well recorded at a couple of different locations. A unique release that makes one want to hear more from this distinctive ensemble. © James Manheim /TiVo

Live From Vienna

phil Blech Wien

Classical - Released May 20, 2022 | Universal Music GmbH

Hi-Res Booklet
In April 2019, the brass ensemble phil Blech Wien for the first time joined forces with Olivier Latry (titular organist Notre Dame, Paris) to form a new, unique body of sound under the baton of Anton Mittermayr. The concept for this extraordinary listening experience was worked on for over a year: the declared aim was not the usual juxtaposition, but the merging of the two sound worlds, realized through trombonist Mark Gaal's arrangements. After the great success of the first performance in the sold-out Kulturpalast Dresden with the new Eule organ, the concert was repeated a week later on April 25, 2019 in the great Musikvereinssaal in Vienna. Olivier Latry on the Rieger organ with its 6,138 pipes and the 17 musicians create atmosphere, beauty, as well as powerful sound normally associated with large orchestras. © Deutsche Grammophon
