Bach: Inventions & Sinfonias

Zhu Xiao-Mei

Classical - Released October 30, 2015 | Accentus Music

The Inventions and Sinfonias of Johann Sebastian Bach are essential training pieces for young pianists, so they are quite well-known, though somewhat less venerated than the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Goldberg Variations, and the Art of the Fugue, which are regarded as much more challenging and lofty. Yet Zhu Xiao-Mei's recording on Accentus Music demonstrates that these are not mere exercises or easy pieces for beginners, but artistically challenging works in their own right, in which every choice is evident in the exposed two-part and three-part counterpoint. This album was recorded in the Mendelssohn Room at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, which has lively acoustics that complement Zhu's playing without drowning her sound or taking the edge off her crisp articulation. Listeners who prefer to hear these pieces played on harpsichord may not care for any performances on piano, but Zhu is so meticulous and precise in her execution, even a Bach purist can appreciate her skills and ability to make these pieces intellectually and emotionally satisfying. © TiVo

Bach Inspirations

Thibaut García

Classical - Released October 5, 2018 | Warner Classics

Booklet
Ever since the days of Andrés Segovia, albums related to Bach's music have come along often enough. This entry by the young French guitarist Thibaut Garcia has much to recommend it, and indeed Segovia seems to have exerted a strong influence on Garcia's tone, self-possessed but sensuous. It doesn't get any better than the opening La catedral of Paraguayan composer Agustín Barrios, whose music is thankfully becoming more widely exposed: Garcia is arresting here. He's also very strong in his duets with soprano Elsa Dreisig, the Ave Maria of Gounod and the Aria from Villa-Lobos' Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 (sample the Gounod, where Dreisig veritably seems suspended above Garcia's guitar clouds). Grouped with these may be the lovely arrangement of the Bach Chaconne from the Partita for solo violin in D minor, an arrangement, like that of the Gounod, by Garcia himself. A good deal of space is given over to Polish-French composer Alexandre Tansman, who wrote music along various interesting neoclassic lines. The Inventions (Hommage à Bach) and Pièce en forme de Passacaille suggested themselves probably because they were written (but never performed) by Segovia; they are less neoclassic pieces than almost Bach knockoffs, and Garcia can do less with them than with the other pieces here. Stronger is the Suite Brève of Dusan Bogdanovic, innovatively expanding the Bach model in both harmonic and rhythmic directions; the return to familiar pieces by Bach at the conclusion after these has a strong impact. Erato's engineers, working in the Salle des concerts de Arras, achieve superb results, and the little-heralded Orchestre Nationale de Montpellier Occitane enters into the spirit of the thing. Photogenic, talented, and original, Garcia is plainly a young guitarist to watch.© TiVo

Johann Sebastian Bach: The Complete Works for Keyboard, Vol. 8: Köthen, 1717-1723 - For Maria Barbara

Benjamin Alard

Classical - Released May 12, 2023 | harmonia mundi

Hi-Res Booklet
The new delivery of the complete works for keyboard of Johann Sebastian Bach (Volume 8), brought to us by harmonia mundi, and featuring Benjamin Alard on the harpsichord, clavichord, and organ, is centred around the composer’s work while he was with his first wife, Maria Barbara. Featuring 3 CDs, or 85 tracks in this digital version, it brings together a series of compositions for educational purposes. On the one hand the Inventions and Sinfonias, on which all apprentice pianists and harpsichordists have tried their hand, and, on the other hand, the six French Suites probably composed to perfect the musical skills of their eldest son, Wilhelm Friedemann. They are “French” only in virtue of the apocryphal title which was given to them after Bach’s death. We find no trace of this mentioned on the original manuscripts. Bach's music also escapes strict classification, even if the influence of Couperin can be quite clearly perceived in this vast corpus, demonstrated by Benjamin Alard’s clever introduction of some Preludes by the French composer as an epigraph to the French Suites of Bach. Above all, these pieces are reminiscent of his own genius, with various influences intended to create a world belonging to the Cantor.Faithful to his organological research, here Benjamin Alard uses a pedal clavichord like that built by the French organ maker, Emile Jobin. The colour of this discreet instrument is simply bewitching. A sort of fruitiness is exuded, the full depth and subtlety of which can be savoured, notably in the Pedal-Exercitium, BWV 598 and in the transcription for keyboard of the famous Chaconne - Second Partita, initially composed for the violin. We also like the golden tones of the Couchet harpsichord from 1645, "restored" (modified later) by Blanchet in around 1720. We find the entirety of Benjamin Alard’s skill in this new recording; his science which illuminates complicated polyphony, his clean energy, and his curiosity for fascinating worlds of sound. © François Hudry/Qobuz

The Swingle Singers

The Swingle Singers' scat vocal jazz swing arrangements of Johann Sebastian Bach classics were among their most popular material, particularly in Europe (where they actually enjoyed some chart success in the U.K.). Accompanied by nothing more than double bass and drums, the octet distributed their vocal parts equally among two sopranos, two altos, two tenors, and two basses, favoring brisk tempos. Occasionally, indeed, they were so brisk they verged on hyperventilation, as on "Prelude No. 1 in C Major" and the version of "Fugue No. 5 in D Major" drawn from "The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1." They do slow things down once in a while on numbers like "Aria" (from the composer's "Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major") and parts of "Sinfonia," which tend to tilt the mood a little more toward the classical. The album's inventive but a little white bread in its relentlessly wholesome, upbeat tone. Pop fans might hear echoes of the Swingle Singers' work, whether direct or coincidental, in the harmonies of artists like the Association and the Beach Boys, and a U.K. rock group, the Belfast Gypsies, a spinoff of Them, actually based its "Aria of the Fallen Angels" on the Swingle Singers' reading of "Aria" on this album.© TiVo
