This 2023 release inaugurates an ongoing series from baritone Samuel Hasselhorn and pianist Ammiel Bushakevitz, performing Schubert works two centuries on from their date of composition, and slated to culminate in 2028, the bicentennial of the composer's death. The project begins with one of the most famous Schubert song cycles of all, Die schöne Müllerin, D. 795, depicting the crackup and despair of a young wanderer who falls in love with a beautiful miller's daughter. Hasselhorn has plenty of recent competition in this cycle; listeners can sample the 2017 recording by Christian Gerhaher and Gerold Huber for another approach, but this one promises well for the ongoing project. Die schöne Müllerin is a work in which Schubert took vast strides toward the emancipation of the piano in the lied, and Bushakevitz leans into this aspect, with details that illuminate and often foreshadow themes developing in the text. Hasselhorn has a warm baritone with an appealing conversational tone that turns chilly and quiet toward the cycle's downer conclusion. Another draw is Harmonia Mundi's sound from the b-sharp studio in Berlin; the engineers put Bushakevitz just a bit forward in the mix, not so much as to sap energy from Hasselhorn's singing, but enough to highlight his perceptive performance. John Eliot Gardiner, the Monteverdi Choir, and the English Baroque Soloists come to Bach's St. John Passion after their ambitious traversal of all the church cantatas, so they are immersed in the subtleties of the composer's expressive sensibilities and musical styles. Their performance of the St. John Passion is emotionally explosive and often darkly dramatic; the opening chorus, for instance, is roiling and tumultuous, almost chaotic, a wrenching opening to the passion narrative. As dark as the tone is, it is never murky; this is the darkness of obsidian whose blackness is revealed when light glints off its sharply defined surfaces. The performances of the soloists match the brilliance, finesse, and clarity of the chorus and orchestra. As the Narrator, tenor Mark Padmore sings with urgency and acute sensitivity to the text; he comes across as an engrossing storyteller. His voice has an exemplary purity and he is equally impressive in the lyrical tenor arias. Bass Hanno Müller-Brachmann is a warmly sympathetic Jesus, and bass Peter Harvey is a forceful Pilate. The remaining soloists, all of whom are excellent, have relatively small parts in the passion, but soprano Joann Lunn and Bernarda Fink are standouts. The recording offers clean and exceptionally well-defined sound. Gardiner's version should be especially attractive to listeners looking for a polishedperformance that emphasizes the emotionally charged atmosphere of the score. © TiVo

Baritone Thomas Guthrie gets top billing, as is usual for the singer, on this recording of Schubert's song cycle Die schöne Müllerin, but equally important is the ensemble Barokksolistene, contributing a string quintet and a pair of guitars as accompaniment to Schubert's familiar songs about the fair maid of the mill. The arrangements are by Guthrie, but this release was the product of a musical-theatrical presentation by Barokksolistene, a group that has tried, so to speak, to bring classical music back to the barrooms, with performances of Baroque music in pub-like settings. It is hard to evaluate the recording without the theatrical context; the backing group is different from the usual ones offered by Barokksolistene, and there is something of the flavor of two projects going at cross purposes. On the other hand, arrangements of all kinds were common in the 19th century, and even if a string quintet would be unlikely for an informal musicale, nothing here goes beyond the bounds of what is reasonable. Guthrie has an appealing baritone, and as an introduction to the undoubtedly experimental spirit of Barokksolistene, this album succeeds. German baritone Christian Gerhaher and his accompanist/partner-in-creativity Gerold Huber have risen to the top of the heap in primary lied repertory, and it is easy to see why. In their second turn through Schubert's Die schöne Müllerin, Gerhaher could simply have applied his golden baritone, and everybody would have been happy. Instead, he steps into character and conveys the unsettled psyche of the cycle's frustrated protagonist. He may gain strength at times, whereupon the famed Gerhaher sound comes through, but the cycle has a convincing dramatic arc that ends in unhappiness and weakness. Sample Trockne Blumen toward the end for the full range. Another Gerhaher innovation here is the inclusion of unset poems, recited by Gerhaher at the beginning, at the end, and along the way. This both breaks the tension and provides a more complex context to the whole sequence, and it's certainly something that one can imagine Schubert and his friends doing in their chambers. The booklet of the CD version has more on Schubert, Müller, and their orbit. A masterful, extremely satisfying remaking of some famous songs, and a Die schöne Müllerin that elevates the cycle to the level of Die Winterreise, D. 911.© TiVo

There are amateurs and amateurs. Nietzsche, philosopher and poet, who managed to develop a world of thought far beyond the grasp of most mortals, thought he was also a composer. Alas, poor Friedrich, he always remained a bloody amateur. Picking here and there in Schumann, Liszt, Wagner, sometimes (quite involuntarily) announcing Satie with his naivety – a trait which Satie adroitly wove into his music, whereas Nietzsche’s naivety is but uncouthness –, he “composed” (for lack of a better word) a remarkable amount of Lieder, some choral pieces, and not few piano pieces. This album presents all the completed two-hand piano pieces, keeping in mind that there are a few four-hand pieces, not recorded here. Anecdote : among the four-hand piano pieces is a Nachklang einer Sylvesternacht, “Memories of a New year’s Eve” which Nietzsche had spent with the Wagners – where he had his own room for some time. Alas, poor Friedrich, the Wagner sneered at the piece – for good reason, it might be added: yours truly has the score under the eyes and… hopeless… – and subsequently there was no more contact between them. What is fascinating in those pieces is the character, sometimes Hungarian-Lisztian, sometimes heroic-Wagnerian, sometimes Schumanno-manneristic, incredibly ill-crafted, fraught with clumsy harmonies and moronic melodies, which offer a marvellous glimpse into Nietzsches mind far beyond his philosophical work. Let’s also mention a quite singular Fragment an sich (“Fragment in itself”) which is to be repeated indefinitely “with melancholy”. Jeroen Van Veen plays only the completed pieces – the vast majority of scores by Nietzsche are but fragments and sketches. An absolute must hear! © SM/Qobuz

Bach's Christmas Oratorio, BWV 248, consists of a set of six cantatas, each with recitatives, arias, and chorales. Moreover, some of the music for this most solemn of Christian events was borrowed by Bach from his own secular compositions. Yet it is a unified work, designated by Bach himself as an oratorio, and the biblical narration of the Christmas story is worked into the usual recitative-aria structure. There aren't any melodies in the work that are really among Bach's greatest hits, but the ingenuity of the work as a whole lies in the way it's somehow greater than the sum of its parts. That's the appeal of this version by conductor Stephen Layton, four of his favored soloists, the Choir of Trinity College, and the period-instrument Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment: it respects the small scale of the parts but treats the whole with the weight it deserves. Credit for the balance must go to Layton, who has gotten splendid results from the youthful Cambridge choristers in a variety of common repertory works. They enunciate clearly, hit the pitches precisely, and generally seem excited by what they're doing. The always lively Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment is a perfect partner for the choir, and the soloists engage with the text and convey the feeling that they're in the ballpark of the ones who originally performed the work. There are more daring performances of the Christmas Oratorio on all fronts, but few that make such a satisfying and musical impression.© TiVo
