J.S. Bach : Johannes-Passion (St John Passion)

La Petite Bande

Classical - Released March 2, 2012 | Challenge Classics

Veteran Dutch historical-instrument specialist Sigiswald Kuijken adopts a version of the one-voice-per-part procedure in this performance of Bach's St. John Passion, BWV 245, using four soloists and another quartet for the "ripieno" or choral passages. Refreshingly, he doesn't even try to claim historical authenticity for this in the interview-format notes, pointing instead to the "extremely natural balance with the instrumental ensemble" and the "textual expressivity his approach permits." He even concedes that for a major performance of this work, Bach would likely have had larger forces available. If you believe that the contrast between German Lutheran chorus and Italianate melody lies at the heart of Bach's appeal, forming a richness unparalleled since Albrecht Dürer infused Italian color into the severe German figures of his paintings, then look elsewhere. For the adherent of Kuijken's approach, however, this St. John Passion merits consideration, as much for the unexpected instrumental details emerging from Kuijken's La Petite Bande as for the work of the soloists; alto Petra Noskaiová is superb, but the others are a mixed bag. The sound, from Belgium's Academiezaal concert hall, is a major plus. © TiVo

Bach's "Dialogue Cantatas" generally portrayed Jesus in dialogue with the human soul, first tormented and then at peace. The three cantatas selected here by Berlin's Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, which has, over the years since 1982 (with over a million records sold!) brought together musicians from the city's different orchestras – first those under Soviet rule and then all orchestras following the fall of the Wall – are a part of this genre; all date from the great Leipzig period, specifically the third cycle written by Bach for Leipzig in 1726. It will come as no surprise, hearing these cantatas, that the essence of the first arias is desperate, heart-rending: and as they go on, they move towards relief and joy. It is in these first moments that we see Bach at his most intense, most pained, most chromatic, terribly modern as well as at his most romantic, profoundly lyrical and yet rigorous in the musical discourse. The most superbly original piece is surely the Cantata BWV 49, which begins with a Sinfonia with obbligato organ – in which the listener will recognise the final movement of the Harpsichord Concerto in E Major, when Bach recycled it a dozen years later – and continues with an aria with cello and oboe, both soloists immersed in the soprano's joyous voice; and we finish on a magnificent chorale with an aria – the aria being for the bass of the solo organ, while the soprano part sings the chorale's theme from on high: a staggering display of modernity. © SM/Qobuz

Bach, J.S.: Piano Transcriptions by Busoni, Rachmaninov, Kempff and Hess

Bernd Glemser

Classical - Released January 1, 2007 | Oehms Classics

The line of great German pianists has not been extinguished, and the proof is this disc of Bach transcriptions by Bernd Glemser. Performing arrangements by Busoni, Hess, Kempff, and Rachmaninov, Glemser eschews mere virtuosity for profound musicality, the trademark of great German pianists from Schnabel through Kempff. This is not to say that Glemser's playing is not virtuosic. Anyone who gets through Busoni's arrangement of the Chaconne from the D minor Partita, who can accurately execute its delicate repeated notes, heroic double octaves and monumental sonorities, is clearly a first class virtuoso. But like his German predecessors, Glemser focuses on the depths in every work here. The singing tone of his legato in Kempff's transcription of the Siciliano in G minor, the graceful lyricism of his counterpoint in Busoni's arrangement of Wächet auf, and the joyful ease of his tempo rubato in Rachmaninov's transcription of the Gavotte from the E major Partita all sound utterly natural and ineffably moving in Glemser's hands. Though some might find his approach occasionally overly rhetorical citing as an example his massive ritardando at the Chaconne's close, listeners who have admired the great German pianists of the past will most likely be able to look past Glemser's rhetoric to his echt Deutsch heart. A co-production with the Bayerischer Rundfunk, Oehms Classics' digital sound is clear and vivid, but also very evocative. © TiVo
