All That Emotion

Hannah Georgas

Alternative & Indie - Released September 4, 2020 | Brassland

Prior to releasing All That Emotion, her fourth studio album, Juno-nominated songwriter Hannah Georgas spent part of 2019 on tour with the National, both singing backup for the group and opening select shows. Prior to that, she had commuted from her home in Toronto to New York's Hudson Valley for recording sessions with the National's Aaron Dessner, who produced the album. Her debut for Dessner's Brassland label, All That Emotion is a personal work inspired by her own relationships, interactions, and things like long, late-night conversations with friends. It's a subdued, low-contrast set that leans into timbres like piano, muffled drums, humming keyboards, and rich guitar tones as accompaniment for Georgas' yearning, soft-spoken reflections. Some subtle variances include "Dreams," a more electronic-leaning track with an insistent, sixteenth-note bass line and spacy, layered textures, and "Punching Bag," whose juxtaposed whisper-rap and sung lead are accompanied by intermittent noise and a lurching drum beat. Like much of the album, while its mellow character seems well-suited for background or mood music, it also benefits from close headphone listening. "Change," for instance, features circular, melodic keyboard patterns and a syncopated drum rhythm, while quieter, interjected distortion and smooth, seemingly randomized tones emerge below the surface. Meanwhile, a confused Georgas notes: "You're so good at this whole thing/I have no idea how you're feeling." These types of production touches stimulate more attentive listening, especially on some of the sleepier tracks, though the album's overall gentle poignancy and relatable quality is likely to be the main takeaway here. It's a record that may require this kind of attention to detail to fully appreciate, but even absent that, All That Emotion is an elegant exploration of soft atmospheres as well as human behavior.© Marcy Donelson /TiVo

Composed

Jherek Bischoff

Alternative & Indie - Released May 28, 2012 | Brassland

Booklet
Though Jherek Bischoff had already established himself as a multi-purpose asset to experimental indie bands like Xiu Xiu and Parenthetical Girls, and as a freelance producer, arranger, multi-instrumentalist, or songwriter for a number of others, his breakthrough under his own name came with Composed, his second solo album. It arrived six years after a 2006, entirely D.I.Y. self-titled debut. In contrast, Composed features several guests, including such high-profile ones as David Byrne, Caetano Veloso, and Nels Cline. Despite its orchestral sound, Composed was recorded one instrument at a time in living rooms around L.A. by Bischoff, and compiled on a laptop. (The two exceptions were Byrne and Veloso, who recorded their own vocals and sent them to Bischoff.) The result is an expansive blend of quirky chamber pop, avant-garde classical, old-time cabaret, and lush scoring that sets its creator apart from the crowd. The Byrne track, "Eyes," is a sweeping pop confection with Latin rhythms and ukulele that captures the weirdness of an early Danny Elfman film score and the ease of an island laze. If there's a trick to Bischoff's music, it's this ability to parlay such ambitious arrangements into charming set pieces that are, well, fun. Veloso is joined by percussionist Greg Saunier of Deerhoof on "The Secret of the Machines," a sparser entry that plays with dissonance, rhythm, timbre, and melody. In keeping with the album's spirit of adventure, its lyrics are taken from the poem of the same name by Rudyard Kipling. The rest of the set follows in kind -- grand and unpredictable, but warm and familiar. Those inspired by the songs' unique disposition may want to follow up with Scores, an instrumental version of the album that Bischoff released a few months later.© Marcy Donelson /TiVo

The Creatures In The Garden Of Lady Walton

Clogs

Alternative & Indie - Released August 2, 2010 | Brassland

The Clogs fifth full-length release builds on the avant-garde chamber ensemble’s foundation of kaleidoscopic, indie-classical instrumentals by adding equally unpredictable lyrics and vocals. Multi-instrumentalist Padma Newsome, who composed all of the songs during a 2005 residency at Italy’s botanical island paradise, Giardini La Mortella, has crafted a typically labyrinthine and cinematic collection of disparate melodies that draw inspiration from wells all over the world. The quartet is aided in this venture by a trio of guest vocalists including Sufjan Stevens and Matt Berninger (The National), but more specifically, opera singer-turned indie rocker Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond), who appears on six of the ten songs that make up Creatures in the Garden of Lady Walton. Like all Clogs releases, Lady Walton defies simple description. There are moments of impossible beauty (“Owl of Love”), dense, but structured dissonance (“Adages of Cleansing”), and of course, whimsical, classically minded, indie folk (“On the Edge”), that when consumed all together, feel like a perfectly executed mash-up of Aaron Copland, Dead Can Dance, Bill Frisell, and Shirley Collins.© James Christopher Monger /TiVo
