PTX Vol. IV - Classics

Pentatonix

Pop - Released April 7, 2017 | RCA Records Label

Hi-Res
Hot on the heels of their massively popular holiday album A Pentatonix Christmas and its accompanying TV special -- as well as their Best Country Duo/Group Performance Grammy Award for their version of "Jolene" -- Pentatonix returns with PTX Vol. 4 - Classics. As the title suggests, this time the vocal group looks to vintage pop, country, and rock favorites for inspiration and reinterpretation, unlike their previous collections of contemporary hits. Along with "Jolene," the EP includes a cover of John Lennon's "Imagine."© TiVo

Bohemian Rhapsody

Queen

Film Soundtracks - Released December 11, 2009 | Hollywood Records

Hi-Res
The soundtrack to the 2018 Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody offers a fittingly cinematic portrait of the iconic rock band, built around a handful of the group's most well-known songs, including live versions and several tracks reworked specifically for the film. As a souvenir of the movie, the soundtrack works especially well. Opening with guitarist Brian May's arrangement of the "20th Century Fox Fanfare," and showcasing his distinctive searing guitar leads, it perfectly sets the tone for telling Queen and Freddie Mercury's story on the big screen. Here we get such beloved classics as "Somebody to Love," "Killer Queen," "Another One Bites the Dust," and "Under Pressure." Elsewhere, the soundtrack leans heavily on live performances, especially those culled from the group's dynamic appearance at 1985's Live Aid benefit concert. This is especially poignant as the show marked a resurgence in interest in the group, just as Mercury was beginning to lose his battle with AIDS. Similarly, we also get earlier live versions of songs like "Keep Yourself Alive" from 1974's Live at the Rainbow, "Fat Bottomed Girls" from 1979's Live in Paris, and "Now I'm Here" from 1975's Live at Hammersmith Odeon. Also compelling are the few songs specifically reworked for the film, including "Doing All Right," a song from the band's self-titled debut that May and drummer Roger Taylor originated in their proto-Queen band Smile, and their studio-to-live mix of "We Will Rock You." A thoughtfully curated soundtrack, Bohemian Rhapsody offers a compelling narrative of Queen's storied arc into rock legend.© Matt Collar /TiVo

Donkey Punch The Night

Puscifer

Alternative & Indie - Released February 13, 2013 | BMG Rights Management (US) LLC

While his other bands always had a very serious vibe about them, Maynard James Keenan seems like he's exploring his more playful side with his most recent musical project, Puscifer. On its latest effort, the Donkey Punch the Night EP, the band returns with a collection of covers, remixes, and a pair of new tracks. While new tracks "Breathe" and "Dear Brother" are definitely worth the trip, the real stars of the show are the covers of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" and Accept's "Balls to the Wall." While these songs might seem like joke choices coming from the guy who fronted a serious art metal outfit like Tool, they provide a telling window into Keenan's influences. "Bohemian Rhapsody [O.G. Mix]" accentuates the singer's penchant for the dramatic with a relatively straight-ahead rendition of the operatic Queen classic. Meanwhile, "Balls to the Wall [Pillow Fight Mix]" really shows off the kind of simmering anger that Keenan has been mixing with ennui and injecting into his work for decades. Though Donkey Punch the Night isn't the best place to jump into Puscifer's work, it's a well-crafted and thoroughly entertaining EP that will definitely keep Keenan's fans hungry for more.© Gregory Heaney /TiVo

A Change of Seasons

Dream Theater

Metal - Released August 29, 1995 | Atlantic Records

A Change of Seasons is a strange disc. There are only five tracks but with a total time that approaches an hour anyway. The first track, the 23-minute, seven-part epic "A Change of Seasons," is one of the most impressive pieces of music ever written in the progressive metal vein. With the same heavy sound that marked Awake, but with many other styles mixed in, the track features incredible playing, dramatic, complex instrumental arrangements, and soaring vocals. New keyboardist Derek Sherinian (formerly of Kiss and Alice Cooper) adds his own stamp to the Dream Theater sound as if he'd always been with them. The remainder of the tracks are live cover tunes, recorded from the band's "Uncovered" gig at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club; the material varies widely and includes Elton John's "Love Lies Bleeding" and Deep Purple's "Perfect Strangers." The final track, "The Big Medley," has to be heard to be believed; Dream Theater shift musical styles on a dime to cover Pink Floyd, Kansas, Queen, Journey, the Dixie Dregs, and Genesis all in ten minutes.© Phil Carter /TiVo
