In Blood

Holly Golightly

Alternative & Indie - Released December 14, 1999 | Damaged Goods

An excellent addition to the catalog of British garage-punk, icon Billy Childish teams up here with chanteuse Holly Golightly of thee Headcoatees. Her group is the female companion to his legendary Headcoats, and the duo share a passion for the monotony of lurching mono-chord riffs. Hence, In Blood is a concept album based around a message -- that three chords is too many. Backed by the Medway Delta Review, the band is effectively the Headcoats with the addition of Johnny Gibb of the Wildebeests. The group burn through a series of variations on the E chord -- staggering the beat and twisting the riff into every possible variation within the formula. The duos combined voices and lyrical wit make In Blood a kind of post-punk Lee Hazlewood/Nancy Sinatra affair. A compelling highlight in the expansive cannons of Billy Childish and Holly Golightly this comes highly recommended.© Skip Jansenn /TiVo

The DuBMASTER: The Essential Anthology

Dennis Bovell

Dub - Released March 25, 2022 | BMG Rights Management (UK) Ltd

Dennis Bovell's role in the evolution of British reggae is massive. He became active in South London's reggae circles in the late '60s, running a sound system, working as a producer, playing guitar and bass on various tracks, and eventually releasing forward-thinking dub albums of his own under the name Blackbeard. Bovell's work continued without pause from his early days into the next 50 years, and he explored everything from lovers rock to dub to helping shape the sound of post-punk groups who were taking cues from dub's unbridled experimentalism. Dubmaster: The Essential Anthology culls stunning tracks from across Bovell's lengthy career, presenting a thorough overview of how both his solo work and his specific brand of production have grown over time. The 38-track compilation is split into two halves, the first of which focuses on Bovell's songs and dub mixes under his own name, and the second half consisting of songs he produced for other artists. His music takes the form of tender, harmony-heavy lovers rock tunes like "Choose Me," mellow roots tracks like "Run Dem Out" or "Run Rasta Run," and material from later on in his discography like the sentimental "Caught You in a Lie." Bovell's style as a dub mixer is one of the more outlandish and boundary-pushing of the dub producers who made their names in the '70s. He's all over the place with rivers of echo and reverb processing on the horn-heavy "The Grunwick Affair," and only gets more frantic on the nervous rhythms of "Chief Inspector" or the vaporous deconstruction of "Eye Water (Raindrops Dub)." Bovell innovated as a producer for other artists as well, melding reggae's steady sway with disco hi-hats and synths on Janet Kay's 1979 hit "Silly Games" and giving tracks by Delroy Wilson and Marie Pierre a pop sheen. Dubmaster: The Essential Anthology throws light on many of the hats Bovell has worn over the years, showcasing how his curiosity and willingness to approach songs from unlikely angles appear in almost everything he touches.© Fred Thomas /TiVo

Blood in Blood Out

Exodus

Rock - Released October 10, 2014 | Nuclear Blast

Booklet
The veteran San Francisco Bay Area thrash metal legends' tenth studio album is also their first long-layer to feature the singing/screaming talents of Steve "Zetro" Souza since 2004's Tempo of the Damned -- Rob Dukes, who handled vocal duties on the band's four prior outings, split with the group in the summer of 2014. Band and ex/current/deceased lead singer acrimony aside, the 11- track Blood In, Blood Out mostly crushes it, offering up a pulverizing set of textbook thrash-induced mayhem that somehow manages to sound both classic and vital. The band tosses a red herring into the pit with the electro-stomp intro to opener "Black 13," but it doesn't take long for guitarists Gary Holt and Lee Altus to unleash a barrage of staccato riffage that, like a perfectly calculated headshot, effectively drenches the listener in assorted bits of viscera. Elsewhere, Metallica's Kirk Hammet returns to the fold for a guest spot on the particularly crunchy "Salt the Wound," the relentless "Collateral Damage" arrives via a malevolently dissonant descending run that eventually morphs into the scaly backbone of the song, and the insidious title track, with its pit-antagonizing shout-out to late vocalist Paul Baloff ("We wrote the book so you better know the plot/new breed, old creed, let's see what you brought"), all succeed via their obvious disdain for whether or not anybody actually gives a sh*t. For all its excess (some tracks definitely overstay their welcome), Blood In, Blood Out, much like Cannibal Corpse's 2014 offering Skeletal Domain, sounds remarkably dialed-in for a band so long in the tooth, and while it doesn't break any new ground for the stalwart rockers, it certainly does little to tarnish their reputation as thrash royalty. © James Christopher Monger /TiVo
