Louis Beydts: Mélodies & Songs

Cyrille Dubois

Mélodies - Released March 15, 2024 | Aparté

Hi-Res Booklet
The aged Fauré and Reynaldo Hahn took the French Romantic mélodie into the 20th century, and Louis Beydts, who studied with Hahn, took it even further; three of the song cycles here date from after World War II. Beydts was mostly known as a composer of film music, and the songs on this release by tenor Cyrille Dubois and pianist Tristan Raës are all but unknown; three of the cycles receive their world premieres here. The music may seem to evoke a vanished world, but it is often engaging. Beydts distills the Fauré style down to essences, and most of the songs are quite short. The texts are by a variety of French poets of the day, and physical album buyers will get good translations in the hefty booklet. The Cinq Humoresques are sharp little character studies, and in many of the songs, there is a measure of wit (sample "Mademoiselle Rose"). The songs often take the conversational tone of Fauré's songs and dial it down several notches. Dubois has a nicely controlled tone in very quiet material (which describes many of the songs), letting the vibrato drain from his voice but not going flat. Hear "Adonis" for a good example of his comfort with the musical language. The Chansons pour les oiseaux are delightful and could easily be programmed with other works about animals. These are subtle little pieces, but they are immensely appealing, and it is no surprise that the album made classical best-seller charts in the spring of 2024.© James Manheim /TiVo

Debussy: Etudes, Martyre de saint Sébastien

Philippe Bianconi

Classical - Released September 25, 2020 | La Dolce Volta

Hi-Res Booklet
According to Philippe Bianconi, Claude Debussy’s twelve Études are more compositional studies than studies and represent the culmination and pinnacle of his artistry. The French pianist has long shied away from the extreme difficulty in executing these pieces, but with this latest offering he completes his recordings of these piano works by Debussy. In addition to this most beautiful interpretation of the Études, Philippe Bianconi has chosen to include some contemporary pieces so as to give a stylistic coherence to his project presenting a late Debussy, wearied by war, pessimism and cancer which ultimately led to his death at the age of 56. Debussy’s faithful friend, André Caplet orchestrated several of his works and realised a pianistic version for orchestra including these extracts of the Martyre de Saint-Sébastien composed for the dancer Ida Rubinstein on a text by Gabriele d’Annunzio. The piano arrangement still reinforces the austerity found within the original work and includes the passages Debussy ignored in his symphonic fragments. Written in homage to Chopin who Debussy revered, the Études and their complex harmonies open the door to a music of the future. Philippe Bianconi’s light touch is marvellous in the same way as his work on textures and the difficult polyphony in the striking miniatures. Such technique enables him to brave every nuance and endlessly vary colour and atmosphere. © François Hudry/Qobuz

When Aya Nakamura unveiled the track list for her third album, excitement was at boiling point. It was announced that the album would contain the two singles, Doudou and Jolie Nana (which could already be heard all over since summer 2020) and tracks featuring English artists, namely Stormzy and Ms Banks. We were starting to think that the Bamako native was internationalising her music, drawing more and more inspiration from Nigerian afro-beat sounds so as to increase overseas appeal. But this is not the case here. Aya is definitively French-sounding with its mixing of African, Latin, Caribbean and rap rhythms in a way that is exclusive to France. The album shines thanks to its many influences and the extremely precise and skilful production led, among others, by Julio Masis and the beatmaker team Le Side (who had already produced her hits Pookie and Djadja). The song formats are conventionally radio-sounding, all are based on similar structures, and the themes are somewhat outdated (love, rivalries, gossip…). However, several tracks break free from this formula. Firstly, La Machine sees Aya Nakamura settle some scores. She has endured racism, sexism and her private life exposed as she rose to fame. Another exception is Nirvana and its charming Nigerian influences, or Préféré, a rather explicit track featuring Oboy (who was also coached by Le Side). When she is more lyrical, like on Fly, the singer can get caught up in some daring but less moving melodies. But no matter. Her album is set to be a huge success (Jolie nana has topped the singles charts), and the new facets that she displays here, notably that of a fundamentally romantic woman offers something new to her discography. For this, Aya is a real success. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
