Nancy & Lee Again

Nancy Sinatra

Pop - Released March 24, 2023 | Boots Enterprises, Inc.

Hi-Res
From the outset, Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood were a match made in heaven. Their pop hit These Boots Are Made For Walkin’ (1966) was so huge that it occasionally overshadows their other incredible creations, such as Jackson, Sand, Summer Wine and You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin’ (songs which would later feature on Nancy & Lee, the incredible album that brought together the brilliant Oklahoma producer and Frank Sinatra’s daughter). It was a winning combination: his baritone voice that mixed rock, country, jazz, pop and easy listening, and her sexy, wide-ranging vocals, full of charisma. However, the duo’s momentum was cut short when Hazelwood suddenly moved to Sweden without explanation… When the pair finally returned to the studio in 1972, the world had moved on; nobody was expecting anything from them anymore. The charts were now obsessed with electronic sounds, making Lee Hazelwood’s baroque-esque symphonies seem out of touch, even antiquated. Despite this, Nancy & Lee Again (finally reissued and remastered by the label Light in the Attic) remains a masterpiece that desperately deserves to be (re)discovered. It’s got all the duo’s signature sounds; they’re just more luxurious, more spectacular and more dramatic. This reissue is proof that more really is more! From the opening track Arkansas Coal, Hazlewood creates a stunning cinematographic setting with meticulous and fascinating arrangements. Even the lyrics display real ambition, tackling the suffering of single mothers (the beautiful cover of Dolly Parton’s masterpiece, Down From Dover), and the uneasiness felt by veterans of the Vietnam War, which was still raging at the time of the initial release (Congratulations). With its magnificent orchestral arrangements featuring Larry Muhoberac (a member of Elvis Presley’s band TCB, who also worked with Barbra Streisand, Neil Diamond and Lalo Schifrin) and Clark Gassman (who worked with Hazlewood on the 1970 album Cowboy in Sweden), Nancy & Lee Again will age like fine wine. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

Lush Life

Nancy Wilson

Jazz - Released August 1, 1967 | Blue Note Records

Nancy Wilson was one of the few jazz-based pop singers of the 1960s who was able to navigate that decade's rock & roll-crazed waters and stay on top of the single and album charts. While her natural physical beauty certainly didn't hurt her career, it was probably her honest feel for soul and the blues, as well as jazz, that had her riding high during a time when so many of her peers were being dropped by the major labels or moving to Europe. Lush Life follows Wilson's winning formula of combining jazz and adult pop, but while individual tracks stand out, a heavy Barbra Streisand influence hurts the disc overall. Like Babs, Wilson possesses pipes powerful enough to blow the roof off of a barn (as she does on "Free Again" and "Over the Weekend"), but her real gifts come out on the lightly swinging "River Shallow" and a slowly building ballad reading of Bobby Hebb's "Sunny" that puts a fresh spin on the over-exposed 1960s staple. Expert West Coast jazz musicians such as Shelly Manne and Ted Nash contribute to the session, but Billy May and Oliver Nelson's charts are often too string-heavy. While the album is cohesive, it's a shame that you can't tell the difference between the work of two normally singular and unique arrangers. Still, both men did build solid foundations for Nancy Wilson, and Billy May uses the title track as a means to tip his hat to Billy Strayhorn, the song's composer, with a smart mix of big band swagger, intimate small-group jazz, and moody orchestral flourishes straight out of an old film noir. While Lush Life is a pleasing effort that will be enjoyed by Nancy Wilson fans, Welcome to My Love, her 1968 collaboration with Oliver Nelson alone, keeps the strings while wisely ditching the Streisand feel.© Nick Dedina /TiVo

But Beautiful

Nancy Wilson

Jazz - Released January 1, 1969 | Capitol Records

Nancy Wilson has been on the fringes of jazz throughout her career, mostly performing middle-of-the-road pop and R&B. Most of her albums were major productions, but her 1969 effort, But Beautiful, is quite different. On a relaxed and tasteful program of ballads (including three previously unreleased numbers), Wilson sounds properly expressive and a bit influenced by Dinah Washington, while backed by a flawless rhythm section comprised of pianist Hank Jones, guitarist Gene Bertoncini, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Grady Tate. Her performances are straightforward, a little soulful, and very mindful of the melody and the lyrics. There is little of jazz interest here, but this is superior ballad singing and one of Wilson's finest recordings.© Scott Yanow /TiVo
