Paradise Lost

Anna Prohaska

Classical - Released April 10, 2020 | Alpha Classics

Hi-Res Booklet
The gestation of this project lasted two years. Anna Prohaska and Julius Drake finally concentrated their research on the themes of Eve, Paradise and banishment. Some songs were obvious choices, such as Fauré’s Paradis, in which God appears to Eve and asks her to name each flower and animal, or Purcell’s Sleep, Adam, sleep with its references to Genesis. But Anna Prohaska also wished to illustrate the cliché of the woman who brought original sin into the world and her status as a tempter who leads man astray, as in Brahms’s Salamander, Wolf’s Die Bekehrte or Ravel’s Air du Feu. In Das Paradies und die Peri, Schumann conjures up the image of Syria’s rose-covered plains. Bernstein also transports us to the desert with Silhouette.. John Milton’s seventeenth-century masterpiece Paradise Lost was the inspiration for Charles Ives and Benjamin Britten, also featured in this very rich programme that constitutes an invitation to travel and reflection. © Alpha Classics

"Newly recorded," forthrightly announces the cover of this album, on which Paul Anka revisits his ABC-Paramount hits on behalf of his new employer. And there's the rub. The re-recordings aren't bad, but who needs them?© William Ruhlmann /TiVo

Adam and Eve

Catherine Wheel

Rock - Released July 29, 1997 | Columbia - Legacy

Even by Catherine Wheel's lofty standards, Adam and Eve is boldly realized. It's infused with unusual moods, textures, and ambitious touches -- such as built-up volume shifts, or keyboards and acoustic guitars that suggest endless wide-open spaces. The album is also an impressive thematic whole formed by two untitled tracks that start and finish the LP, with gentle connectors between songs in which chords of one tune drift quietly into the start of the next. In markedly lowering the volume throughout large passages of the album, they shine the spotlight on singer/guitarist Rob Dickinson, who alternates his smooth, cool, meditative cooing with a more yearning, emotional, arresting wail. Other guitarist Brian Futter, bassist Dave Hawes, and drummer Neil Sims negotiate a maze of hues and tints, from peaceful, pretty solitude to the most desperate pathos. 1996's release of Like Cats and Dogs (a collection culled from the group's more ponderous, subdued, nearly ambient B-sides) precipitated the album's more restrained approach and more ambitious scope. More importantly, like much of Like Cats and Dogs, the LP is again greatly influenced by Talk Talk's Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock. So it's significant that Talk Talk's Tim Friese-Greene, who'd already produced Ferment and played on Happy Days, was called in again to play keyboards and ended up playing a major role in the album's sound, along with vaunted Pink Floyd producer Bob Ezrin and Garth Richardson. The more moody, reflective qualities that resulted are evident throughout, in the low-rumbling crash of "Broken Nose," the twinkling tones of "Ma Solituda," the near-Pink Floyd pastoral sweep of "Future Boy," the whimsical, throbbing ecstasy of "Delicious" and "Satellite," and the penultimate epic space-floaters, "Goodbye" and "For Dreaming." To put it bluntly, Adam and Eve is brilliant -- as playful as it is gripping, and as sweet as it is contentious.© Jack Rabid /TiVo

NASIR

Nas

Hip-Hop/Rap - Released June 15, 2018 | Mass Appeal - NAS

Hi-Res
After an absence of six years, Nasir Jones returns with a new album produced by Kanye West, as part of the June 2018 G.O.O.D Music salvo. Like recent efforts from Pusha T, Kanye and Kid Cudi before him, Nas’s NASIR project contains seven tracks, like seven deadly sins, each given a laconic treatment by the bard of Queensbridge. Produced and polished in Wyoming, like the rest of the series, this album is full of concision, instinct, and urgency. In the introduction, this is Nas parcelled-out, anti-conformist and skeptical, with Red Army Choirs, the mogul Puff Daddy and the angelic voice of 070 Shake. Over a stunning loop by  Slick Rick, he paints police violence with little impressionist brushstrokes on Cops Shot the Kid with Kanye in tow. Later he works on his excesses, follies and delusions of grandeur on White Label and Bonjour. But it's when he brings in The Dream on Adam and Eve and above all Everything, where Nas hits a more personal note. Somewhere between social commentary, cultural intervention and lucid debate, Nas takes on his own legend, but without necessarily facing up to his faults, as his best enemy Jay-Z did on 4:44. Nasir Jones is trying to have a clear-out, to focus on what's essential, finding both his gift and his curse dulled by the simple things in life. Simple Things is the conclusion of a journey that has been at once public and secret. Throughout its meandering course, Kanye West offers the best possible environment, nestled between classicism and art brut. Nas is very much his own equal here, without compromising his style: people demand a lot of his genius but above all, he remains human.  ©Aurélien Chapuis / Qobuz
