Laugh Track

The National

Alternative & Indie - Released September 18, 2023 | 4AD

Hi-Res
Built on leftovers from the sessions for their other 2023 release, First Two Pages of Frankenstein—which featured a much-ballyhooed appearance by Taylor Swift—Laugh Track was released quietly with similar cover art, but little fanfare. It still feels good to feel bad on Laugh Track, sounding very much like an extension of its predecessor, but slightly more downbeat.  "Losing my momentum, losing my mind/ Not enough to mention, not enough time/ I can't even say what it's about/ All I am is shreds of doubt," vocalist Matt Berninger deadpans rather than sings in "Laugh Track" with guest Phoebe Bridgers adding little more than texture to the vocals of this dirge. Another lament about Berninger's awkwardness, "Coat on a Hook," opens with "Don't leave me here at this party like a coat on a hook," before descending into "Friendships are melting, nothing is helping/ Nothing's worth keeping, promises cheapen."  The monotone "Tour Manager" is a throwaway, but there are moments when the band's talents shine through, the gloom lifts and the music triumphs despite Berninger's enveloping melancholy. The rising tempo of "Space Invader" concludes with a satisfying crash of guitars that drowns out his croaking. Rosanne Cash's vocal presence on one verse and as Berninger's duet partner in the choruses of "Crumble" adds character. Recorded in producer Tucker Martine's studio in Portland, Oregon the sound is smoothly mixed with Berninger's vocals moving up and back.  Hope for the future exists in "Smoke Detector," in which the growling guitars of brothers Aaron and Bryce Dessner continually threaten to break out, as Berninger rushes through word heavy lines, perhaps hopeful his turmoil will pass: "Sit in the backyard in my pharmacy slippers/ At least I'm not on the roof anymore/ In a year or so I hope nobody remembers/ This run of episodes of my time on the floor." © Robert Baird/Qobuz

Cry Baby

Melanie Martinez

Alternative & Indie - Released August 14, 2015 | Atlantic Records

Hi-Res Booklet
Building upon the conceptual ideas of her 2014 EP, Dollhouse, Melanie Martinez's 2015 full-length debut, Cry Baby, finds her taking the innocent imagery of youth and family ("Carousel," "Training Wheels," "Milk and Cookies") and subverting them into angular R&B and electro-infused anthems of familial strife, abuse, and romance gone wrong. An arty, self-assured singer with a style that falls somewhere between Beyoncé and Björk, Martinez first came to the public's attention singing Britney Spears' "Toxic" as a contestant on the third season of NBC's The Voice. Perhaps not surprisingly, then, her songs also fit nicely next to the work of contemporaries like Lorde and Lana Del Rey. As with Dollhouse, aiding Martinez on Cry Baby are a handful of hip-hop and pop-steeped producers including Kinetics & One Love (B.o.B, Pitbull, Neon Hitch), SmarterChild (Krewella, Usher, Tori Kelly), and Frequency (Eminem, Royce da 5'9", Slaughterhouse). Featured on Cry Baby are the singles "Sippy Cup," "Soap," and "Pity Party."© Matt Collar /TiVo

Dead Bees On A Cake [Expanded Edition]

David Sylvian

Alternative & Indie - Released March 29, 1999 | UMC (Universal Music Catalogue)

Booklet
Fans of David Sylvian may consider some of his earlier releases to have been autumnal spectacles filled with intoxicating arrangements and some of the most beautifully heartbreaking songs ever composed. At face value, Dead Bees on a Cake should have been one of David Sylvian's most spiritually fulfilled and innovative releases -- maybe next time. One can admire the rich vocals and impeccable instrumental performances by Talvin Singh, Steve Jansen, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Marc Ribot, among others; however, for David Sylvian, even beautiful tracks like "The Shining of Things" are the sonic equivalent of running on a treadmill. One song makes this worth the price of admission: "Midnight Sun"; while the vocals are classic Sylvian, the bluesy, swampy sound of this track is completely new to him. It would have been fantastic if other songs on the album had followed in a similarly inventive vein.© Sanz Lashley /TiVo

Alphabet City

ABC

Pop - Released October 12, 1987 | UMC (Universal Music Catalogue)

Returning to the Motown and Northern soul that provided the basis of their debut album, ABC turned to the pop songcraft on their fifth album, Alphabet City. The increased songcraft is certainly engaging, particularly on the hit "When Smokey Sings," but the songs are usually indistinguishable from each other, resulting in a sleek, stylish, and thoroughly entertaining album that leaves no lasting memory.© Stephen Thomas Erlewine /TiVo

David Sylvian

The Good Feeling

Christian McBride Big Band

Jazz - Released September 27, 2011 | Mack Avenue Records

Hi-Res Booklet
Bassist Christian McBride was already turning heads as a teenaged sideman with Benny Green during the early '90s, showcasing formidable technique and imagination in his solos. Over the two decades since then, McBride has demonstrated his skills as a bandleader, composer, and arranger as well. After 15 years of studying big-band charts, experimenting, and writing, McBride developed sufficient material for a CD, recruiting some of New York's best and busiest players, including saxophonists Steve Wilson, Ron Blake, and Loren Schoenberg, trumpeters Nicholas Payton and Frank Greene, and trombonists Steve Davis, Michael Dease, and Douglas Purviance, plus pianist Xavier Davis and drummer Ulysses Owens (among others). Six of the 11 pieces are originals, highlighted by the funky, playful "Bluesin' in Alphabet City," the ambitious, multifaceted "Science Fiction," and the upbeat, boisterous post-bop cooker "The Shade of the Cedar Tree." Vocalist Melissa Walker shines on several tracks, including a warm setting of "When I Fall in Love" that opens with the leader's arco solo and a pulsating rendition of Bobby Scott's "A Taste of Honey" that is scored with rich ensemble work behind the singer. The solos by McBride, Blake, Wilson, and Dease especially stand out, though everyone who takes a turn delivers a top-drawer effort. With this fine effort, it's safe to say that Christian McBride's talents as a writer have grown to match his considerable chops as a bassist. © Ken Dryden /TiVo

The Lexicon Of Love

ABC

Pop - Released June 5, 1982 | UMC (Universal Music Catalogue)

ABC's debut album combined the talents of the Sheffield, U.K.-based band, particularly lead singer Martin Fry, a fashion plate of a frontman with a Bryan Ferry fixation, and the inventive production style of former Buggles member Trevor Horn and his team of musicians, several of whom would go on to form the Art of Noise. Horn created dense tracks that merged synthesizer sounds, prominent beats, and swaths of strings and horns, their orchestrations courtesy of Anne Dudley, who would follow her work with the Art of Noise by becoming a prominent film composer, and who here underscored Fry's stylized romantic lyrics and dramatic, if affected, singing. The production style was dense and noisy, but frequently beautiful, and the group's emotional songs gave it a depth and coherence later Horn works, such as those of Yes ("Owner of a Lonely Heart") and Frankie Goes to Hollywood, would lack. (You can hear Horn trying out the latter band's style in "Date Stamp.") Fry and company used the sound to create moving dancefloor epics like "Many Happy Returns," which, like most of the album's tracks, deserved to be a hit single. (In the U.K., four were: "Tears Are Not Enough," "Poison Arrow," "The Look of Love," and "All of My Heart," the last three making the Top Ten; in the U.S., "The Look of Love" and "Poison Arrow" charted Top 40.) ABC, which began fragmenting almost immediately, never equaled its gold-selling first LP commercially or artistically, despite some worthy later songs.© William Ruhlmann /TiVo
