Apartheid Is Nazism

Alpha Blondy

Reggae - Released January 1, 1985 | Alphalliance

While it might be sacrilege in reggae circles to say that any artist could challenge Bob Marley's mastery of the genre, Alpha Blondy fires a dead-on shot literally heard around the world with Apartheid Is Nazism. Furthermore, this work proves that great reggae does not have to come from Jamaica. "Afriki" opens the album with a nod to Jamaica, but while the music is classic, offbeat reggae, there is a strong African feel here, especially in the backing vocals. On every track, the carefully arranged and smartly played music of Blondy's band, the Solar System, tickles the ears with muscular polyrhythms and a variety of stealthily intoxicating percussion. Maneuvering skillfully on top of all of this is Blondy's uniquely plaintive voice. Blondy, like many reggae stars before him, tackles political issues with a dagger wit and thundering basslines. The title track, one of only two songs sung predominantly in English, pleads for America to "break the neck of this apartheid." Like the patois in which Blondy makes his incantations, his religious message is more mixed than the standard reggae paeans to Jah Rastafari. With tracks like "Come Back Jesus" and "Jah Houphouet" on the same album, it's clear that Blondy is attempting to strike a universal theme in the same way Marley did. While Blondy's career can't measure up to Marley when taken as a whole, Apartheid Is Nazism can stand up to most Marley releases.© Matthew Hilburn /TiVo

Habib Koite

World - Released September 9, 2007 | Cumbancha

Booklet
In the six years since Mali's Habib Koite released his last new studio album, he developed a reputation in the West as one of his country's greatest cultural exports. On Afriki, Koite has fine-tuned his carefully manicured approach to melodic, acoustic-based songs of deep personal and global meaning. Always an engaging singer and songwriter, Koite's guitar is on equal footing here; his playing and the overall musicianship of his band, Bamada, outshines anything they offered in their previous outings. Koite exhibits a newfound sensitivity in his playing, always intricate, evocative, rhythmic and moving. Some of the instrumental work is reminiscent of the folk guitar styles of the '60s, but on tracks like the exquisite "N'Teri," a simple song of thanks, Koite brings in lush orchestration and background vocalists, as well as an array of native African instruments such as the balofon and n'goni. Other tracks, among them the album-opening "Namania" and "Africa" (with horns arranged by James Brown veteran Pee Wee Ellis), a song calling for African self-reliance, apply Koite's guitar, soulful voice and the gap-filling backup singers to a more polyrhythmic setting. "Fimani" reunites Mali with the blues it spawned, while the closing "Titati" is a solo showcase for Koite's lone (but never lonesome) guitar. Some may say that the key to Koite's escalating popularity lies in an eagerness to look outside of Mali for ideas to incorporate with his own; that may be so, but that's not such a bad thing at all if the result is an uplifting, empowering world music that truly does bring together so much of the world, in such a warm and enchanting way. © Jeff Tamarkin /TiVo

Na Afriki

Dobet Gnahoré

World - Released February 5, 2007 | Cumbancha

A lovely, gentle dose of Afro-pop from an artist originally from the Ivory Coast, but now based in France as fighting tears her homeland apart. Her second disc, and the first under her own name, finds her assured and in control throughout, whether on uptempo pieces like "Ma Poo" and "Dala," or the slower material like the gorgeously aching "Khabon N'Daw." At times she moves left of the mainstream, like on the brief "Pygmees," with its layered vocables and percussion, creating a startling interlude before easing back into the duet "Palea," which is almost African R&B, and smooth as silk (she does it again with "Deuil"). That Gnahore's emerging as a major talent is beyond question; her voice can prowl between lulling softness and fierce pride, and the arrangements that frame the songs are never intrusive, simply there to set off and enhance her singing. She's already been nominated for a BBC Radio 3 World Music Award for her debut, and it's quite probable that this will bring her another. She's the equal of any young African singer around these days. © Chris Nickson /TiVo
