No Time To Die

Hans Zimmer

Film Soundtracks - Released October 1, 2021 | Decca (UMO) (Classics)

Hi-Res
At just 18, Billie Eilish is the youngest artist to have recorded the theme song for a James Bond film. She follows in the footsteps of Shirley Bassey, Nancy Sinatra or, more recently, Madonna and Adele. Written by Eilish and Finneas O'Connell (her brother and regular collaborator), the song for this 25th James Bond film keeps in step with the Californian's voluptuously melancholic style, while respecting the lyrical requirements of this type of exercise. Another staple is the famous theme composed by Monty Norman, which features in Gun Barrel. That theme is accompanied by a few nods to composer John Barry, who wrote the James Bond soundtracks until 1987. And so, in Good To Have You Back, we have the immense pleasure of hearing the main theme from On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969). And in Matera, listeners will recognise the melody of We Have All the Time in the World, the theme song from that same film, immortalised by Louis Armstrong. How did Hans Zimmer manage to find his way through this maze of references and must-have snippets? Called to the rescue after the defection of Dan Romer, the composer of Interstellar and Gladiator took three months to write a soundtrack that fulfils its role perfectly. The muscular percussion and electronic sounds are combined effectively with a symphony orchestra and an electrifying choir (the London Voices ensemble, a regular in Hollywood blockbusters since 1986). Note also the presence of the former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, among the soloists. © Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz

The Harder They Come

Jimmy Cliff

Film Soundtracks - Released July 7, 1972 | UMC (Universal Music Catalogue)

In 1973, when the movie The Harder They Come was released, reggae was not on the radar screen of American pop culture. The soundtrack went a ways toward changing that situation. It is a collection of consistently excellent early reggae songs by artists who went on to thrive with reggae's increased popularity, and others for whom this is the most well-known vehicle. Jimmy Cliff is both the star of the movie and the headliner on the soundtrack. He contributes three excellent songs: the hymnal "Many Rivers to Cross," "You Can Get It If You Really Want," and "The Harder They Come" (the latter two are repeated at the end of the album, but you probably wanted to hear them again anyway). Interestingly, the better production values of his songs actually seems to detract from them when compared to the rougher, but less sanitized, mixes of the other tracks. All the songs on this collection are excellent, but some truly stand out. Toots & the Maytals deliver two high-energy songs with "Sweet and Dandy" and "Pressure Drop" (covered by the Clash among others). Scotty develops a mellow, loping groove on "Stop That Train" (not the same as the Wailers' song by the same name) and the Slickers prove on "Johnny Too Bad" that you don't have to spout profanity or graphic violence to convey danger. The Harder They Come is strongly recommended both for the casual listener interested in getting a sense of reggae music and the more serious enthusiast. Collections don't come much better than this.© Toby Ball /TiVo

From Russia With Love

John Barry

Film Soundtracks - Released March 1, 1963 | CAPITOL CATALOG MKT (C92)

Hi-Res
The first James Bond soundtrack composed from beginning to end by John Barry, From Russia With Love set the pattern for the score of every movie that followed in the series -- except for the title song (sung by Matt Munro) which, in this particular instance, was the least impressive element of the soundtrack. In later releases, the producers would see the value of getting singers perceived as a little more on the cutting edge of popular music in one way or another, and they would gain some major hits as a result. However, in this case it was the instrumental music that was among the most startling and unusual ever heard in a film score up to that time, beginning with "007," a horn-driven piece with a driving beat. (New versions of "007" would end up in two of the next three Bond movies as well as several more that followed.) The other highlight of this flavorful soundtrack was "Girl Trouble," a suspense theme that played off the dynamics of a solo cello, strings, and horns in a relentless beat; this piece was so inspiring as action music that a big chunk of it was used as the opening and closing theme of a local news show in New York for decades. Everything on this album sounded special in one way or another -- whether the actual music or the dynamics and timbres involved -- and although it never yielded a hit single, From Russia With Love deservedly remained in print for decades on vinyl. [Note: As with most of the classic James Bond soundtracks, From Russia With Love is reportedly due for a major upgrade in sound and a repackaging sometime in 2001.]© TiVo

Licence To Kill (James Bond 007 Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Michael Kamen

Film Soundtracks - Released January 1, 1989 | Radioactive

Several weak songs vie for space with Kamen's muscular, if unmemorable, score. The film itself did not perform too well, proving to be the swan song for Timothy Dalton's portrayal of the suave secret agent -- too many things went wrong, from the script to the direction to the music. While Kamen is a brilliant composer, this was definitely the wrong film for him to work on.© Steven McDonald /TiVo

Anthology

Ray Barretto

World - Released September 11, 2012 | Fania

Since Fania began remastering and reissuing its vast catalog on CD, and putting together some of the most killer compilations of Latin jams ever heard, they've discovered an entirely new audience than the beatheads who could seldom find the original albums. Spread over two discs, containing 26 monster jams, this is all-killer, no-filler. Disc one is identical to the 2006 double-disc compilation The Essential Ray Barretto: A Man and His Music. It relies heavily on Latin soul and boogaloo material. It commences with "El Watusi" from Charanga Moderna, and "El Bantu" from On Fire Again. The title jam from Señor 007 is here (despite the fact that it's an album Barretto didn't particularly like, it's a smoking tune). There are a couple of tracks from the classic Acid -- his first album on Fania proper -- "Soul Drummers" and the monster freak-out title track. Disc two differs from the Essential Ray Barretto in that it contains three less tracks. The reasoning appears to be that instead of offering a portrait of Barretto's diversity in the '70s and '80s as he branched out into Latin jazz, fusion, and funk, the second disc hones in on what the great conguero did best: hard salsa. Some of the highlights are "Indestructible," "Guararé," "Guaguancó Bonito," and Quítate La Mascara." As awesome as this set is, it simply introduces the man's work. What we really need is a three-or four-disc collection, digging deeper into all of the music Barretto played as a leader and with the Fania All-Stars. Anthology is a nice update to The Essential Ray Barretto, but it's not an essential purchase for anyone who already possesses the earlier compilation.© Thom Jurek /TiVo
