Multi Faith Prayer Room

Brandt Brauer Frick

Electronic - Released June 2, 2023 | Brandt Brauer Frick

Hi-Res Distinctions Qobuz Album of the Week
In 2002, five years after Echo, which was already serving as a reboot to their career, the Brandt Brauer Frick entered a new era of their electroacoustic project, this time taking a somewhat artsy turn. First came their interactive Dance Selector clip, with a troupe of contemporary dancers, then the Multi Faith Prayer Room installation at Art Basel Miami, which gave its name to this album. The BBFs asked people around the world about their idea of the future in order “to encourage, in our own way, a positive reflection on the future, far from the rise of populism”. Their answers haunt the interludes (notably FUTURE, with the Catalan singer Marina Herlop) of a record resolutely aimed at the dancefloor.A somewhat retro dancefloor, which would reach its peak in the 90s, as evidenced by titles like This Feeling (feat. Sophie Hunger), the very acid house Dotted Line, the single Act One, showcasing an incredible adventure between acid, rave and mixes performed by Mykki Blanco, or Closer to You, on which the Germans have fun inviting Duane Harden, one of the legends of the house, and the voice of the cult song You Don't Know Me by Armand Van Helden. The rest is pretty much the same, almost as if the Berliners wanted to drown the dystopia in dance. And it worked well. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz

Kaleidoscope EP

Coldplay

Alternative & Indie - Released July 13, 2017 | Parlophone UK

Hi-Res
A little less than two years after the release of A Head Full of Dreams, Coldplay have brought out these five tracks, presented as an interlude - a kind of companion EP for their last studio album. Chris Martin's band are clearly at a crossroads. Having grown into a kind of millennial U2, Coldplay are hopping between their original DNA, the evolution of the sounds of their times, and a strong propensity for turning out crowd-pleasers. And all this without, clearly, losing their soul. That is surely what drove them to work again with the great Brian Eno (who produced Mylo Xyloto in 2011 and Viva la Vida in 2008) on the song A L I E N S, which is the central piece of Kaleidoscope. On this track, the English band are returning to their roots. The basis of a very contemporary pop music which is at once adventurous and firmly based in a musical consensus. This is a pop which is wrapped up in magical and intriguing sounds that are clearly came from Eno. On All I Can Think About is You, which opens hostilities brilliantly, Coldplay are at their most charming, their most intriguing even, in the form of this hypnotic ballad. As for Miracles (Someone Special), they provide us with a new and perfect mix of pop and R&B, with the help of Atlanta rapper Big Sean. In short, Coldplay are mastering every new genre that they venture out into... A Head Full of Dreams was a particularly snappy, exultant record, colourful and celebratory. "It's our seventh thing,", Chris Martin told the BBC, "and the way we look at it, it's like the last Harry Potter book or something like that. Not to say that there might not be another thing one day, but this is the completion of something." The Kaleidoscope EP shows us the Coldplay of tomorrow while they keep one eye fixed on the past... © CM/Qobuz

The Off-Season

J. Cole

Hip-Hop/Rap - Released May 14, 2021 | Dreamville, Inc., Under exclusive license to Roc Nation Records

Hi-Res
J. Cole can come across as a man with something to prove. The Off-Season opens up with the hysteria-inducing blowout piece 95.south, followed by amari, which is strongly influenced by the Chicago sound. These choices seem to show us a J. Cole who is trying to contradict his image as a nice rapper, but for all that, hardness isn't necessarily his strong suit. J. Cole's real strength, as this sixth album shows, is that balance between modern sounds, boom bap samples and vocal melodies that he has been putting out throughout his career, in which smart songwriting trumps pure attitude. Tracks like close or the.climb.back demonstrate this perfectly. Although sometimes a bit hampered by the artist's affected seriousness, this album is nevertheless one of his best releases in five years. Listen to one of its singles, my.life featuring 21 Savage and Morray, and you'll be convinced. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz

lately I feel EVERYTHING

Willow

Alternative & Indie - Released July 16, 2021 | MSFTSMusic - Roc Nation Records, LLC

Hi-Res
Brushing genre boundaries aside once again, multi-hyphenate Willow Smith makes another stylistic pivot on her fourth studio album Lately I Feel Everything. Having excelled on her R&B, pop, and alternative singer/songwriter forays, Willow straps on a guitar for this potent rock blast that bridges pop-punk and '90s alt-rock with an unpolished messiness that is unapologetic, youthful, and a pure thrill. Initially thought to be a purely pop-punk exercise, Lately reveals itself as something more moody and angsty, the cathartic outburst of a young artist letting off some steam in a crazy world where she has to navigate regular human emotions and relationship woes against a backdrop of fame and privilege. Those darker moments -- "Don't Save Me," "Naive," and "Lipstick" being the best of the bunch -- are a time warp to the '90s, when distorted guitars, crunchy riffs, and atmospheric swirls dredged up plenty of anxiety, pain, and confusion. The lush rocker "4ever" links Willow's eras, sounding like an introspective outtake from The 1st backed by a studio band. In addition to guests Ayla Tesler-Mabe, Tierra Whack, and Cherry Glazerr, Willow recruits a pair of famous genre predecessors to inject some cred to this project with their high-profile co-signs. As the go-to drummer for the 2020s crop of pop-punk revivalists (see Yungblud, MGK, and KennyHoopla), Travis Barker lends his trademark delivery on a trio of tracks, including the hit single "Transparent Soul" and album standout "Grow," a bright romp that features pop-punk big sister Avril Lavigne on vocals. That latter track is worth the price of admission alone, but the rest of this brief set is such an unexpected surprise that it's worth the nearly half-hour investment. There seems to be nothing that Willow can't do as she adds rock to her résumé with ease.© Neil Z. Yeung /TiVo

Il gioco della cieca. Madrigali, Canzoni & Villanelle per cantare, et sonare

Concerto di Margherita

Classical - Released February 4, 2022 | Arcana

Hi-Res Booklet
A young ensemble of instrumentalists and singers revives the precious historical practice of singers accompanying themselves (already brought back into currency by the soloist Vivabiancaluna Biffi), thus producing a wholly new sound in music usually assigned to unaccompanied voices. With Concerto di Margherita, self-accompanied singing becomes "collective" for the first time in our era, and is amplified in a shared gesture in which all the members of the group – playing and singing together with extraordinary coordination – produce a sonority unprecedented in this repertory. Created at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Switzerland, the group (which is named after the Duchess of Ferrara, Margherita Gonzaga) performs as a consort of five voices, theorbo, harp, viola da gamba, guitar and lutes, inspired by the "Concerto delle dame" of Ferrara. The recording debut of Concerto di Margherita presents arrangements of a wide range of instrumental and vocal works (madrigals, villanellas and canzonas), drawing on music by De Wert, Gastoldi, Monteverdi and the "blind man’s buff" scene from Giovanni Battista Guarini’s Il pastor fido (1580). © Arcana
