Martha Argerich & Friends (Live, Lugano Festival 2014)

Martha Argerich

Concertos - Released May 8, 2015 | Warner Classics

Booklet Distinctions 5 de Diapason
Similar to previous volumes in this long-running series, the Live from Lugano 2014 box set offers the expected mix of a piano concerto, various chamber works, and keyboard performances by Martha Argerich and a group of well-known and rising musicians. While most of the performances are satisfying, particularly Argerich's refined interpretation of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor, K. 466, and the handful of chamber sonatas by Frank Bridge, Francis Poulenc, and Mieczyslaw Weinberg, there is one selection that doesn't work so well. The arrangement for piano quintet of Darius Milhaud's La création du monde is unbalanced in the murky recording, and the lackluster transcription and sluggish performance show none of the jazziness and charm of the original version for chamber orchestra. Other than that oddity, and the curiosity that is Ferruccio Busoni's youthful transcription for two pianos, eight hands of Felix Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 1 in C minor, which comes off more like a clever stunt than a compelling performance, the rest of the pieces are well-chosen and equally well-played. The roster of artists includes Lugano regulars, like cellists Mischa Maisky and Gautier Capuçon, violinist Gidon Kremer, and pianist Gabriela Montero, though most of the musicians are not household names. All the same, they are likely familiar to collectors of these live recordings and deserve the exposure the festival brings.© TiVo

Pearl Jam

Rock - Released August 30, 2000 | Pearl Jam Live P&D

In a move to beat bootleggers to the punch, Pearl Jam decided to release each of their 2000 American concert performances in a series of inexpensive double-CD sets. The August 30th concert recorded in Boston, MA, creeps to a dynamic start with the opening song, the heart-wrenching final track from their 1991 debut, Ten. Energetic versions of "Animal" and "Given to Fly" highlight the first set, along with an improvisational song which seems to be still under construction. Hardcore fans were treated to a stripped-down version of the "Jeremy" B-side, "Footsteps," complete with Vedder's Neil Young-inspired harmonica flourishes. "Daughter" was another interesting performance, as lead singer Eddie Vedder spent a portion of the song trading sections of Sonic Youth's "Androgynous Mind" with the audience. The second set warms up with "Betterman" and blazes through "Go," which consistently sounds better live than on the original studio recording. The show wraps up with the introspective "Nothingman," the grunge staple "State of Love and Trust," and Eddie Vedder's precious ukulele-only "Soon Forget" (humorously interrupted by Vedder's "you were clapping out of time, and I was out of tune, so we're even" before starting the song again). A pair of covers, J. Frank Wilson & the Cavaliers' "Last Kiss" and their adopted "Rockin' in the Free World" finish the evening in a high-energy flourish. This show is a fine supplement to the previous night's show (which was only fractionally better) and would find a happy home in any Pearl Jam fan's collection.© Zac Johnson /TiVo
