Notes On A Conditional Form

The 1975

Alternative & Indie - Released May 22, 2020 | Polydor Records

Hi-Res
The fourth album from Manchester quartet led by the “bad boy of pop-rock” (as described by Pitchfork) Matty Healy, 31. The most interesting thing about The 1975’s music is its ability, through diversity and multiplicity, to represent the times in which we live. This is their strength, but also one of their limitations. On this rather pretentiously titled album, “Notes On A Conditional Form”, we find an ensemble of many styles: an intro of several minutes consisting of worrisome spoken-word à la Laurie Anderson (in fact an alarming speech by Great Thunberg on “The 1975”), thrashing rock and punks’ cries on “People”, a quasi-classical section resembling the soundtrack of a new age film on “The End (Music For Cars)” before finishing it all off with the very R&B, “Frail State of Mind”… A sort of virtuous patchwork, the album resembles an eclectic radio show or playlist. With some twenty-two tracks, and a one hour twenty minute run time, this might appear lengthy. But the diversity of this post modern collage helps us to forget that we are listening to just one group. The only danger? A blurred identity diluted through multitude. A little like our lives today. © Yan Céh/Qobuz

Musique Vol 1 (1993 - 2005)

Daft Punk

Electronic - Released April 3, 2006 | Parlophone France

Daft Punk titled their hits compilation with an indicator (Vol. 1) that more would be forthcoming, and it's easy to believe that in a dozen years, another dozen singles could be collected with no drop in quality. Unlike their contemporaries coming of age during the rise of electronica, Messrs. Bangalter and de Homem-Christo structured their tracks with drop-dead hooks, peerless beats that were perfect for the dancefloor or the living room, and an innovative production sense. Although Musique, Vol. 1: 1993-2005 won't be necessary for longtime fans, it boasts a few inclusions that should lure in even those who have each of the first three albums. The first reason is its opener, "Musique," actually a B-side (of debut single "Da Funk") whose basement sonics and filter-disco vocal treatment made it the best side of Daft Punk's best single. The second excellent tactic is including three of Daft Punk's greatest remixes, including the electro-shocked "Mothership Reconnection" (originally by Scott Grooves) and "Chord Memory" (originally by Ian Pooley). During their first dozen years, virtually all of Daft Punk's best productions were singles (the only exception being "Face to Face" from Discovery), and Musique is the best example why the duo was tops in electronica from the late '90s to the turn of the millennium.© John Bush /TiVo

Lo Mejor De La Mano Negra (Best Of 2005)

Mano Negra

Rock - Released December 26, 2005 | Because Music

Best of 2005 is a collection of best tracks (one of many) of legendary Paris-based Spanish-language ethnic punk band Mano Negra. Led by singer and guitarist Manu Chao and his brother, trumpeter Tony Chao, Mano Negra emerged from the multi-national melting pot of the Parisian streets, and offered a completely new and refreshing take on punk, which clashed together not only mere musical styles but cultural and ethnic attitudes as well. They were active throughout '80s and '90s, and this double-disc release collects their best-known songs.© Sergey Mesenov /TiVo

Thunder and Consolation (2005 Remaster)

New Model Army

Rock - Released March 15, 1989 | Parlophone UK

NMA proved that they were well worth waiting for. Thunder and Consolation begins grandly, keeping the keyboards from "White Coats" on "I Love the World," an anthem filled with bittersweet irony and sarcasm. Self-produced, the album never falters, and the single "Stupid Questions" made an impression on American college and modern-rock radio, especially when working visas were granted to the band and they were allowed to tour the U.S. Violin was added by Ed Elain Johnson to further fill out the sound and give it an "Irish Folk" quality on epic songs "Green and Grey," and "Vagabonds." The band uses samples on "225" and "Green and Grey" to further enhance the flavor of the album.© Jason Smith /TiVo

Their Law The Singles 1990 - 2005

The Prodigy

Electronic - Released October 17, 2005 | XL Recordings

Even more so than the celebrated Chemical Brothers -- who began recording after Prodigy but received a hits compilation before -- Liam Howlett and co. were fantastic singles artists who also fashioned excellent full-lengths. As such, Their Law 1990-2005, the singles collection that could put the cap on their career, is a collection that will leave listeners breathless but also one that can't capture how special Prodigy were to the electronica and rave scenes. Their biggest single, "Firestarter," comes first, and its LP (The Fat of the Land) gets most of the early slots, although things right themselves by the end with no less than five singles -- all of them incredible -- from 1995's Music for the Jilted Generation and four from 1992's Experience. Although including three tracks from 2004's desultory Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned may help fans hear, for the first time, the best of a bad album, it's nearly criminal that it comes at the expense of solid material from Music for the Jilted Generation and Experience (like "Break & Enter" and "Wind It Up"). Although there are no new tracks (perhaps a good thing), included is an Audio Bullys remix of "Out of Space." © John Bush /TiVo

Retrospective 1990-2005

Natalie Merchant

Pop - Released September 27, 2005 | Rhino - Elektra

Natalie Merchant was with 10,000 Maniacs for four full-length albums before she departed for a solo career. Four albums and ten years into her solo career, she released Retrospective 1995-2005, a 13-track collection of highlights, containing no rarities or B-sides (those were reserved for the simultaneously released deluxe edition of the album, which had a 15-track bonus disc containing all notable non-LP tracks, including three unreleased cuts, plus duets with the Chieftains, R.E.M., Billy Bragg, and Susan McKeown). Her solo career began on a high note with Tigerlily, a continuation of the sound of latter-day 10,000 Maniacs records, heavy on the polish and laid-back atmosphere and light on jangling guitars. It entered the charts at 13, spawned the Top Ten single, "Carnival," and its Top 20 follow-up, "Wonder," and garnered generally positive reviews. But her momentum began to slow on her 1998 sophomore effort, Ophelia, which may have climbed higher on the Billboard album charts, but it failed to produce any big hit; "Kind & Generous" peaked at 18, but it never gained the same popularity as either "Carnival" or "Wonder." From there, Merchant settled into a comfortable cult, turning out variations on the Tigerlily template on 2001's Motherland and getting a little folkier on 2003's collection of traditional tunes, The House Carpenter's Daughter. Retrospective balances these four albums nicely, selecting four cuts each from Tigerlily and Ophelia while taking three from Motherland and two from House Carpenter. It not only takes the obvious highlights from these albums, but it draws an accurate, representative picture of her solo career. Which is not to say that it will please 10,000 Maniacs fans looking for music in a similar vein -- after her solo debut, Merchant's music got a little too small and insular, a little more concerned with mood and lyrics than with pop hooks to appeal to a broader audience. Those fans will likely want to stick with Tigerlily, which is a more satisfying listen overall than Retrospective, but for those who want an overview of Natalie Merchant's solo career, this does a fine job of providing that.© Stephen Thomas Erlewine /TiVo

Chopin, F.: Etudes (Zayas) (1983 and 2005 Recordings)

Juana Zayas

Classical - Released July 6, 2009 | Music and Arts Programs of America

Booklet
Even though Frédéric Chopin's etudes, Opp. 10 and 25, and the Trois nouvelles études are study pieces for pianists of considerable acumen, they have become enormously popular for their tunefulness, dazzling brilliance, and striking moods, and are regarded by connoisseurs as character pieces of the highest order. This double-disc package of two complete performances by Cuban pianist Juana Zayas is a fascinating display of an artist's growth with the etudes, and comparing her energetic performances of 1983 with her more reflective readings of 2005 can absorb a listener for many sittings. Naturally, there are more complex qualities in these performances than can be summed up in such a broad generalization, and Zayas' playing is varied enough in expression and execution to almost make the point moot. However, if the emphasis in the 1983 recording was to demonstrate Zayas' technical command of the keyboard, and the point of the 2005 performance is to show a more emotive or picturesque side of the music, then the simplified description at least helps identify her different approaches in playing Chopin in these sessions. There are also two major differences in sound quality, whereby the 1983 offers a bright and hard-edged sound and the 2005 a richer, rounder piano tone. In any event, there is no need to choose between either of Zayas' performances because this twofer allows the listener to experience two worthy albums that differ mostly in interpretation, not in quality. Zayas offers exceptional performances both times, so whether one disc is preferred over the other is due more to subjective appreciation than to objective analysis. © TiVo

Melissa (2005 Remaster by Ted Jensen)

Mercyful Fate

Metal - Released October 30, 1983 | Metal Blade Records

Mercyful Fate's debut album, Melissa, took Black Sabbath's dark occult obsessions to an extreme, fusing them with the speed and tightened, twin-guitar riffing attack of British metal bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. But the band had a distinctive sound of its own, thanks to the neo-classical flourishes of guitarists Hank Shermann and Michael Denner and the unpredictable vocal leaps of King Diamond, who could jump from a deathly growl to an unearthly falsetto wail in the next line. The band was still finding itself, and some of the songs on Melissa have a tendency to move into long, meandering instrumental sections, but the basic components of Mercyful Fate's influential European gothic black metal sound were already in place.© Steve Huey /TiVo
