Ančerl Gold Edition 39. Shostakovich: Symphonies Nos 1 & 5

Karel Ančerl, Czech Philharmonic

Classical - Released January 7, 2005 | Supraphon a.s.

Ironic, tragic, virtuosic, and modernist, this is, oddly enough, the music that Karel Ancerl and the Czech Philharmonic were born to play. Although, of course, Ancerl and the Czechs excelled at the rich repertoire of Czech orchestral music, their country's occupation by the Nazis and then the Soviets made them the right performers for Shostakovich's First and Fifth. The black irony, the bitter tragedy, the enormous virtuosity, and the wholehearted modernism of Shostakovich's First and Fifth matched the dreadful situation of the Czechs all too closely. While some listeners might prefer the relentless intensity of a great Russian performance or the massive muscularity of an American performance, the strong, supple, and sympathetic playing of Ancerl and the Czech's performance is honest to the hard truths of Shostakovich's music. And while some listeners might object that Ancerl and the Czechs are too lyrical for Shostakovich's monumental scores, others listeners might assert that their soul-deep humanity makes them the ideal interpreters of his music. Supraphon's remastering of the early-'60s stereo is deep, detailed, warm, and vivid. © TiVo

The Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of Hell, Vol. 1 (Deluxe Edition)

Five Finger Death Punch

Rock - Released July 29, 2013 | Prospect Park

Hi-Res
With a title like, The Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of Hell, Vol. 1, it would be easy to think that Five Finger Death Punch had gone off the deep end and decided to release a concept album. Fortunately, the only concept here is that the band went into the studio and felt like they were putting out too much good work to be contained on one album, so they opted to release two records in quick succession. Listening to the first installment, it's hard to argue with their logic. The opening salvo of their sprawling, two-volume work is an incredibly solid album of hard hitting alt-metal that finds the band on a (mostly) inspired run. The best moments are when the band pushes their sound to the limits of their capability for aggression. "Burn MF" and "Dot Your Eyes" both represent the most pit-worthy offerings here with chugging guitars and propulsive, pounding beats. The album also sports an impressive guest list, with metal legend Rob Halford dropping in on the opener, "Lift Me Up," as well as Max Cavalera and Jamey Jasta, who drop in on alternate versions of "I.M. Sin" and "Dot Your Eyes," respectively. The album's most surprising guest appearance comes by way of its biggest misstep, with rapper Tech N9ne dropping a verse on the band's cover of LL Cool J's "Mama Said Knock You Out." Although the song is executed nicely, a rap-metal song on an album in 2013 just feels like a step backward for the band. Given how solid the rest of this is, it's an easy mistake to overlook, and if the material on The Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of Hell, Vol. 1 is any indicator, it's going to be a pretty good year for Five Finger Death Punch fans.© Gregory Heaney /TiVo

Martha Argerich & Friends Live at the Lugano Festival 2013 (Édition StudioMasters)

Martha Argerich

Chamber Music - Released May 19, 2014 | Warner Classics

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions 5 de Diapason
Each year, Martha Argerich and her friends gather for the summer festival in Lugano, Switzerland, to perform a variety of chamber and keyboard works that showcase musical talents across generations. Highlights of these performances have been released annually on box sets that are representative of these artists' brilliant virtuosity and fine musicianship. The set for 2013 includes performances of works by Beethoven, Respighi, Liszt, Shostakovich, Ravel, Debussy, Offenbach, and Saint-Saëns, presented with enthusiasm by Argerich and her friends Mischa Maisky, Renaud Capuçon, Gautier Capuçon, Francesco Piemontesi, Alissa Margulis, Jura Margulis, Gabriela Montero, Cristina Marton, and many others, some of whom have become frequent guests at the festival. While most of the performances have an intimate character, as might be expected in the cello sonatas of Beethoven and Shostakovich, and the violin sonatas of Respighi and Ravel, there are larger scale works that frame the package: the Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 1, which Argerich performs with the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, conducted by Hubert Soudant, and the chamber orchestra version of Saint-Saëns' Carnival of the Animals, so there is some variety, though the emphasis is, as in previous years, on chamber music.© TiVo

Sacchini: L'abbandono delle richezze di S. Filippo Neri (D. Hauk, F. Hauk & M. Hößl Critical Edition)

Concerto de Bassus

Classical - Released September 22, 2023 | Naxos

Booklet
Antonio Sacchini's L'abbandono delle ricchezze di S. Filippo Neri was composed in 1765 for a semi-private occasion and, like much of the other Italian sacred music of the last part of the 18th century, has been known only to the deepest of specialists. The notes here bill it as "an oratorio about the father of oratorio" -- the saint Filippo Neri was associated with the emergence of a declamatory style in the late 16th century -- but Sacchini called it an azione sacra ("sacred drama"), and indeed, it is an opera in all but name, with a succession of fizzy arias of basically similar sunny tone, separated by recitatives. The title means "The Renunciation of Riches by Saint Filippo Neri," and the tale dramatizes an episode from the saint's life in allegorical form. Filippo, perhaps because of his youth at the time, is sung by a soprano, as is Povertà ("Poverty"). The most attractive feature of the work is the writing for these two, effectively brought to life by sopranos Yeree Suh and Ketevan Chuntishvili. These two, one a veteran and the other a newcomer, make an admirably contrasting pair in the duet "Tanta dolcezza O Dio!" at the end of the first part. There are also parts for Splendor and Deception, and these are ably handled by tenor Markus Schäfer and bass Daniel Ochoa. Another point of interest is the recitatives, divided between harpsichord and organ accompaniment. Conductor Franz Hauk, leading the ensemble Concerto de Bassus, keeps things moving and does not try to find more in the music than is there. Vocal aficionados and lovers of the early Classical period will find enjoyment here. © James Manheim /TiVo

Messiaen: Éclairs sur l'au-delà... (Édition StudioMasters)

Sir Simon Rattle

Classical - Released October 5, 2004 | Warner Classics International

Hi-Res Booklet
If any conductor can be trusted to bring out the shimmering colors, textural depths, and profound majesty of Olivier Messiaen's late masterpiece Éclairs sur l'au-delà..., then confidence in Sir Simon Rattle certainly is well-placed. Approaching this massive work with acute precision in its smallest parts, yet ever mindful of the music's cosmic dimensions, Rattle leads the expanded Berlin Philharmonic in an exacting yet sweeping performance. The consistency of the large ensemble is remarkable, particularly in the processional of wind choirs in "Apparition du Christ glorieux," in the elaborate counterpoint of birdsongs in "Plusieurs Oiseaux des arbres de Vie," and in the sublime string textures of "Demeurer dans l'amour" and "Le Christ, lumière du Paradis." Yet there are many delicate details that demonstrate Rattle's meticulousness and sensitivity to color, especially in the ringing changes of "La constellation du Sagittaire" and the quicksilver exchanges of "L'Oiseaux-lyre et la Ville-fiancée." Only the recorded sound is less than ideal, perhaps too spacious and resonant for Messiaen's most complicated passages to be heard clearly. Even so, this challenging work has had few great performances, and Rattle's excellent rendition is only surpassed by Myung-Whun Chung's brilliant reading with the Orchestre de l'Opéra Bastille on Deutsche Grammophon, which also offers superior sound.© TiVo
