Beatles Go Baroque, Vol. 2

Dalibor Karvay

Classical - Released November 22, 2019 | Naxos

Hi-Res Booklet
Classical musicians have always recognised the musicality and originality of The Beatles’ songs, Leonard Bernstein declaring the Lennon-McCartney composing team ‘the Schuberts of our time’. This sequel to Peter Breiner’s multi-platinum "Beatles Go Baroque" takes the original concept even further, keeping 18th-century masterpieces such as Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons and Bach’s famously stylish and beautiful Violin Concerto No. 1 largely intact, elegantly combining them with The Beatles’ most enduring melodies to create a joyously genuine 21st-century mashup. © Naxos

Musique Mecanique

The Carla Bley Band

Jazz - Released April 1, 1979 | Watt

Carla Bley's tentet performs some of her most colorful themes on this often-humorous and generally stimulating set. "Jesus Maria and Other Spanish Strains" and the three-part "Musique Mecanique" are particularly memorable. This is the perfect setting for Bley's music, with such musicians as trumpeter Michael Mantler, Gary Windo on tenor and bass clarinet, trombonist Roswell Rudd and Bob Stewart on tuba making their presence felt. © Scott Yanow /TiVo

Fürchtet Euch Nicht: Bassoons & Bombards. Music from the German Baroque.

Syntagma Amici

Classical - Released November 20, 2020 | Ricercar

Hi-Res Booklet
‘Fear not...’ The Angel’s words to the shepherds suggest the daring premise of this recording, which, for Ricercar’s fortieth anniversary, enriches in highly original fashion the series dedicated to the discovery of early instruments and their repertory. The cover illustration, depicting two angels playing the bass shawm and the bassoon, perfectly portrays the subject of this disc devoted to the original repertories written for the two instruments in seventeenth-century Germany, whether it be the ceremonial music of the Stadtpfeifer (town musicians), chamber music or even sacred compositions. © Ricercar

In seculum viellatoris: The Medieval Vielle

Le Miroir de Musique

Classical - Released March 9, 2018 | Ricercar

Hi-Res Booklet
Do not confuse the medieval vielle, which is played with a bow, with the vielle à roue, or hurdy-gurdy, whose strings are plucked by a wheel which is turned with a crank. The vielle is one of the older instruments, and it is typical of the Middle Ages. Larger models are similar in size to the modern viola, and it is related to a smaller instrument which would generally become known as a rebec at the end of the 14th century. The broad and generic meaning of the word vielle (or viola, in Occitan) was drawn out by the arrival of more specific terms like gigue (from the German-speaking world), rebebe (from the Arabic rebab) or crwth or rotte (from the Celtic fringe). The vielle is characterised by a flat casing, oval or oblong in shape, sometimes cut fairly low laterally, with a variable number of strings. In other words, there were many different versions of this generic instrument, and on this album we find it in many different shapes, sizes and regional origins. He leaves it to the listener to form their own view of the many different sounds, which vary so widely from each piece to the next; and whose manuscripts vary so widely in terms of their origins: Germany, Italy, Flanders, Occitania, and Celtic regions. The majority of these pieces are anonymous, but we can still identify Perdigon, the Ardechois troubadour from the early 13th century; the Flemish Johannes Ciconia (1370-1412) and the famous Burgundian Guillaume Dufay, who needs no introduction. The Miroir de Musique ensemble, led by Baptiste Romain, specialises in the music of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance; their members sing and play many different forms of vielle, harp, percussion instruments and the bagpipes! © SM/Qobuz

Schmitt: Orchestral Works

Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra

Classical - Released November 13, 2020 | Naxos

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions Diapason d'or
Florent Schmitt was a student of Massenet and Fauré, and winner of the coveted Prix de Rome. His impressionistic style blends influences ranging from Debussy to Wagner, with references to Stravinsky and other contemporaries. Conceived as a ballet but revised as a symphonic poem, La Tragédie de Salomé depicts Salome’s dangerous seductiveness with subtle magnificence. Narrative symbolism also applies to the evocative word painting of the exquisite Musique sur l’eau. The perilous saga of Oriane et le Prince d’Amour contrasts with the poetic tapestry of orchestral colours in Légende, in a version that replaces the original solo saxophone with violin. © Naxos
