Liszt: Sonate en si mineur, Sonetti di Petrarca, Valse oubliée No.2, Étude "La leggierezza", Rhapsodie hongroise No.6

Nelson Goerner

Classical - Released April 5, 2024 | Alpha Classics

Hi-Res Booklet
Swiss-Argentinian pianist Nelson Goerner had already come out with a record entirely dedicated to Franz Liszt: published under the Cascavelle label, it contained recordings of the Sonata in B minor made by the Polish Radio in Warsaw in 2007. Here he is again 15 years later with his twelfth album for the label Alpha Classics, recorded in the beautiful concert hall of the Liège Philharmonic, known for its excellent acoustics. Goerner has considerably matured in his vision of Liszt’s music, and his piano playing is also much better captured here. Liszt’s monumental Sonata needs exceptional pianists who can capture its full scope, and Nelson Goerner is one of them! He takes this gargantuan piece by the hand – or rather, by the fingertips – and goes from dreamlike state to the immeasurable strength of Dante’s Inferno thanks to an unparalleled sense of narration as well as a relentless playing style. The fugue is a highly-anticipated moment when all that precedes it seems to come together. Played by Nelson Goerner, it feels as if hit by a violent storm, a furiously hallucinatory force that is nevertheless perfectly controlled. The mysterious little scale that Liszt borrowed from Clara Schumann’s Deuxième Romance op. 11 and around which he composed his entire Sonata finds itself amplified to dizzying heights, until it reaches its mystical climax in the form of existential inquiry. Yet this great female pianist would never fully comprehend this work’s velocity and genius. A generous selection of other works supplement Liszt’s masterpiece, including the Three Petrarch Sonnets, the second Valse oubliée, La leggierezza, and the Hungarian Rhapsody No.6. Each piece gives the listener the opportunity to savor Liszt’s many facets through Nelson Goerner’s prodigious technique. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Joseph Haydn : Cello Concertos

Freiburger Barockorchester

Cello Concertos - Released March 27, 2003 | harmonia mundi

Booklet Distinctions Choc de Classica
This admirable Harmonia Mundi release presents Franz Josef Haydn's two cello concertos and the Cello Concerto in G minor by Georg Matthias Monn with the luster of period instruments; refined, idiomatic playing; and exceptional sound quality, with full resonance; and cellist Jean-Guihan Queyras and the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, directed by Petra Müllejans, render these works with exquisite details and emotional depth. In a real sense, their performances are acts of rediscovery, for Haydn's cello concertos have become routine fare from too many modern renditions, and Monn's piece is unfamiliar from too few performances. Indeed, all three concertos have suffered the vagaries of preservation and interpretation. Haydn's Cello Concerto No. 1 in C major was once considered lost until its discovery in 1961; the Cello Concerto No. 2 in D major suffered false attribution and its authorship was debated until the appearance of the manuscript in 1954; and Monn's concerto survived only in an arrangement for harpsichord and strings until Arnold Schoenberg edited it in 1912. To set the record straight, this disc presents the concertos intelligently refurbished, with appropriate eighteenth century style and color. Through their insightful scholarship and sensitive performances, Queyras and Müllejans have produced a fine alternative to the less authentic mainstream recordings.© TiVo
