Thierry Maillard

Born on August 11, 1966 in Puteaux, France, Thierry Maillard is a classical and jazz pianist, accordionist, composer and arranger. He first became interested in music at the age of eight years old when he began playing the accordion. By the age of 14, he had switched to piano and started showing an interest in composition. He attended the École Normale de Musique de Paris and graduated at the age of 17 with a teaching diploma. Inspired by Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, and Jean-Luc Ponty, Thierry Maillard chose to pursue jazz music and formed his first trio at the age of 18. In 1992, he joined Hungarian violinist Debora Seffer’s quartet and played alongside her until 1997. He released Paris – New York, his first album as a leader, in 1998. The album found him working with John Patitucci (double bass) and Dennis Chambers (drums). During the course of his career, Thierry Maillard has worked in different formations including trio, quartet, septet (trio formation plus string quartet), and big band. His catalog includes albums such as New Septet (2000), Time’s Color (2001), Héliotropes with Debora Seffer (2005), Beyond the Ocean (2013), The Alchemist (2014), Alone (2017), and Zappa Forever (2020). During this period, he also composed film scores – including The Story of Peter and the Madman (2002) and Juste une heure (2006) – and wrote music for advertisements. In March 2021, Thierry Maillard released the album Ballades with his trio.
