Richard Narroway

A musician with a passion for classical music outreach as well as performance, Richard Narroway is a cellist from Sydney, Australia. Born in 1991, he began playing the cello at an early age, studying with David Finckel, Hans Jørgen Jensen, Susan Blake, and Takao Mizushima along the way. He earned degrees from Juilliard and Northwestern University's Bienen School of Music before pursuing a doctorate with Richard Aaron at the University of Michigan. During his time there, he co-founded Chamber Music Michigan with the aim of bringing chamber music to communities across the state, and served as artistic director. He also toured Australia performing the complete Bach cello suites alongside the works of contemporary Australian composers. He accompanied the concerts with various educational workshops and events. Before releasing his first studio recording, Narroway had appeared as a soloist with the Grand Rapids Symphony and the Hangzhou Philharmonic Orchestra, and in venues such as the Kennedy Center, the Sydney Opera House, and the Chicago Symphony Center. His numerous competition titles include the Third Beijing International Cello Competition and the 2010 Stulberg International String Competition. At the latter, he also took home the Bach Award for the best interpretation of a Bach solo work. Narroway made his recording debut with Johann Sebastian Bach: Six Cello Suites BWV 1007-1012, released by Sono Luminus in 2017. Recorded at the age of 24, he took an updated approach to the album, using a 1930 Carl Becker cello and a modern bow.
