Les Ogres De Barback

Les Ogres de Barback are an eclectic French folk group comprising the five Burguière siblings. Initially formed as a quartet in the mid-'90s, the band is known for its nimble arrangements and diverse stylistic range which encompasses everything from French chanson traditions and Eastern European folk to post-punk and children's music. Since the release of their third album, 2001's Croc' Noces, they have recorded exclusively for their self-owned Irfan (Le Label) imprint, producing a colorful and extensive catalog that includes highlights like 2004's breakout Terrain Vague, 2011's Comment je Suis Devenu Voyageur, a number of live albums, and the popular Pitt Ocha children's series. Les Ogres remained prolific through the end of the 2010s, maintaining a consistent chart presence and releasing their ninth studio album, Amours Grises & Colères Rouges, in 2019. A fifth sibling joined the band in 2022, appearing on the Pitt Ocha et Le Vélo À Propulsion Phonique album and subsequent tour which, like their previous tours, was held under a big top circus tent. They celebrated their 30th anniversary in 2024. Les Ogres formed in 1994 around the talents of the four Burguière siblings: Fred (vocals, accordion, guitar), Sam (violin, trumpet), Alice (cello, double bass), and her twin, Mathilde (piano, reeds). Fred and Sam first collaborated in 1992 as members of the short-lived alternative rock group Les Minoritaires. A year later, the band split and the brothers continued playing as a duo, largely abandoning their guitars in favor of accordion and violin. With the 1994 additions of Alice and Mathilde, the Burguières officially launched Les Ogres de Barback, channeling their collective influences into a unique hybrid of various folk, rock, and world music styles. Their debut LP, Rue de Temps, appeared in 1997, followed two years later by Irfan, Le Héros. Around the time of the 2000 half-live, half-studio set Fausses Notes et Repris de Justesse, Les Ogres founded their own package tour, dubbed Latcho Drum in honor of the acclaimed Tony Gatlif documentary of the same name. They also founded their own record company, Irfan (Le Label) which they inaugurated with 2001's Croc' Noces album. Released two years later, La Pittoresque Histoire De Pitt Ocha marked Les Ogres' first foray into children's music. With their 2004 concept album, Terrain Vague, the quartet scored its biggest hit to date, entering both the French and Belgian charts. Over the next several years, the band released two more live albums, the 2007 studio set Du Simple au Néant, and another Pitt Ocha children's album. By the start of the 2010s, Les Ogres were a unique and popular touring act that also regularly made the French charts. 2011's Comment je Suis Devenu Voyageur reached number 16 in France and 38 in Belgium, a new high for the group. A live album, La Fabrique à Chansons, and children's release, Pitt Ocha et la Tisane de Couleurs, followed ahead of 2014's Vous m'emmerdez!, which commemorated Les Ogres' 20th anniversary. In the latter half of the decade, they collaborated with another French sibling group, Brotto Lopez, on several tours that yielded the 2018 live album Les Ogres de Barback & Le Bal Brotto Lopez. Another studio album, Amours Grises & Colères Rouges, arrived in 2019. Heading into the next decade, the siblings offered yet another live album, the 2020 double disc Chanter Libre et Fleurir, then invited younger brother Léo to become Les Ogres' fifth member. He made his debut on 2022 Pitt Ocha et Le Vélo À Propulsion Phonique and the big top tour that followed. In early 2024, as the group celebrated their 30th anniversary, they released the single "La Pitt' Danse" in collaboration with fellow French group La Machine.
