Claudio Astronio

Versatile Italian musician Claudio Astronio is active as both a conductor and a keyboardist (on both harpsichord and organ) in music from Baroque to pop and jazz. He leads his own historical performance ensemble, Harmonices Mundi, which has recorded both Italian and German Baroque music. Astronio has a large recording catalog. He made his debut in 1998 as a harpsichordist, releasing several volumes of music by Antonio de Cabezón under the title Obras de Música on the Stradivarius label. He remained on that label through the 2000s decade, issuing the album Handel: Vò far guerra in 2001. In 2004, Astronio recorded his first album as a conductor, leading a performance of Alessandro Stradella's oratorio San Giovanni Batista. That album featured Harmonices Mundi, with which he has continued to record. Astronio made his debut as an opera conductor in 2007, leading a performance of Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice at the Ravenna Festival. That year, he also conducted a staged version of Bach's St. Matthew Passion, BWV 244, in a collaboration with the London Dance Company and choreographer Ismael Ivo. Astronio formed the Theresia youth Baroque orchestra in 2012 (often styled THERESIA). He moved to the Brilliant Classics label that year, leading Harmonices Mundi on a recording of Stradella's opera La Susanna. That year, he and Harmonices Mundi backed sopranos Gemma Bertagnolli and Susanne Ryden on the recital Handel: Italian Duets. The same forces issued a complete recording of the cantatas of Nicolaus Bruhns on Brilliant in 2016. Astronio's collaborators in concert are a distinguished group, including soprano Emma Kirkby, harpsichordist Gustav Leonhardt, and string player Yuri Bashmet. He has also led ensembles on jazz and pop recordings, including the album Coplas a lo divino featuring vocalists Maria Pia de Vito, Michel Godard, and Paolo Fresu. Astronio returned on recordings in 2024, conducting Theresia on an album of overtures by composer Joseph Martin Kraus. Astronio teaches harpsichord and chamber music at the Antonio Scontrino Conservatory of Music in Trapani, Italy.
