Tutto è iniziato da un tweet di Flying Lotus! Come suggerisce il titolo stesso, Voice Notes inizia con un lungo discorso di Yazmin Lacey a proposito di un vecchio tweet del beatmaker californiano sulla creatività, su un sottofondo di smooth jazz soul. Ed è su questi due generi – soul e jazz – che la cantante di Manor Park (East London) ha incentrato la sua vena artistica. Ovviamente, non è la sola e tantomeno la prima a giocare con questi generi (basti pensare ai Soul II Soul, Neneh Cherry, Sade, Jill Scott o a Erykah Badu), ma Yazmin Lacey si distingue per grazia e sensualità.
Voice Notes sa miscelare il nu-soul degli anni ’90 con il jazz dei collettivi inglesi (nello stile di Ezra Collective, una delle sue dichiarate influenze), i beat dal sapore hip hop e un reggae leggero. Una vera colonna sonora che avvolge la sua prosa e la sua voce sempre coinvolgente... A 33 anni, la britannica ha avuto modo di perfezionare questo suo magnifico trattato sul groove, lei che ha beneficiato del progetto Future Bubblers lanciato da Gilles Peterson a sostegno dei giovani talenti.
Dopo tre EP (Black Moon nel 2017, When The Sun Dips 90 Degrees nel 2018 e Morning Matters nel 2020) e la partecipazione alla compilation Blue Note Re:Imagined (2020) in cui reinterpreta I'll Never Stop Loving You di Dodo Greene con alcuni virtuosi della nuova scena jazz londinese (la bassista Marla Mbemba, la tastierista Sarah Tandy, il trombettista Ife Ogunjobi e il batterista Jordan Hadfield), è finalmente arrivato il suo attesissimo primo album. Un disco nato da alcune session con gli amici Craigie Dodds, JD. Reif, Zachary Cayenne-Elliott aka Melo-Zed e soprattutto il produttore Dave Okumu della band The Invisible, che mette la sua firma su una produzione molto raffinata. Tutto è iniziato da un tweet di Flying Lotus! Come suggerisce il titolo stesso, Voice Notes inizia con un lungo discorso di Yazmin Lacey a proposito di un vecchio tweet del beatmaker californiano sulla creatività, su un sottofondo di smooth jazz soul. Ed è su questi due generi – soul e jazz – che la cantante di Manor Park (East London) ha incentrato la sua vena artistica.
