Nel 1997, Damon Albarn si innamorò perdutamente dell’Islanda. Ed è in mezzo ai suoi paesaggi, alle sue terre modellate dal fuoco e dal ghiaccio che vive parte dell’anno, in una casa con una vista mozzafiato affacciata sullo spettacolo della natura. Questo album, The Nearer The Fountain, More Pure The Stream Flows, è stato in gran parte scritto e composto in uno stato contemplativo. Dominato da pezzi voluttuosi caratterizzati da momenti di calma e di tensione benevola, è profondamente ispirato da ciò che l’ambiente ha scolpito. Ascoltando The Cormorant si possono percepire l’acqua e la terra. Su Esja, l’aria e fuoco. E nei momenti più sospesi, Albarn indulge in influenze jazz, espresse in gran parte attraverso il suo sassofono, come su Giraffe Trumpet Sea. Delle sue band Blur e Gorillaz ha conservato il lato giocoso e distaccato, come nell’allegro baccano di Combustion e nei testi sereni di Draft Water.
