Le parole di Lord Byron, John Keats, Thomas Hood, Percy Bysshe Shelley, William Wordsworth e Alfred Tennyson non sono ad appannaggio esclusivo dei giovani tormentati che vagano da soli in mezzo alla tempesta, in campagna, con i capelli al vento e la casacca di velluto sulle spalle. No. Una donna di 74 anni, segnata dagli eccessi, dalla malattia e da una vita intensa, può anche appropriarsi di questa febbrile poesia del XVIII secolo. Marianne Faithfull, con alle spalle anche il peso di una lotta di tre settimane contro il Covid, che fortunatamente non l'ha uccisa, fa vibrare questi testi con intensità, recitandoli con grande emozione e facendoli suoi. Per vestire di note queste parole, nel suo nuovo album intitolato She Walks in Beauty, ha chiamato il sempre perfetto Warren Ellis, membro dei Bad Seeds, che ha confezionato per lei un abito cucito su misura, con parti tanto moderate quanto magniloquenti. Gli strati di synth spettrali e gli archi fluttuanti si avvolgono attorno alla voce cesellata di lady Marianne. In un alone onirico e crepuscolare, ma senza l'oscurità propria della morte e della caducità, i paesaggi scorrono di fronte a noi, assieme alla poesia di questi grandi autori, che si radica nella nostra tormentata epoca. Anche Nick Cave ha contribuito, con il suo piano e alcune percussioni sulla maggior parte dei brani. Vincent Segal con il suo violoncello. E ha partecipato anche Brian Eno con il suo clarinetto su The Bridge of Sighs. Questo magnifico She Walks in Beauty è un album dotato di una grande profondità.
