Now in his eighties, Jordi Savall still seems like a spring chicken as he brilliantly continues his illustrious career as a choir and orchestra conductor. Known for ceaselessly venturing into 19th-century repertoire from Beethoven to Bruckner, this latest album takes yet another step forward as contemporary Catalonian composers vibrantly pay him homage. This “Musical Offering to Jordi Savall” was conceived by Diego Fernández Magdaleno, a pianist from Valladolid who commissioned fourteen Spanish composers to present this gift of appreciation to their revered elder. Reflecting on the vast repertoire rediscovered by Jordi Savall over the years was the springboard for a long series of concerts across Europe. Works of the past were put in dialogue with one another, one part led by Hesperion XX and Jordi Savall, and the other by pianist Diego Fernández Magdaleno, who placed each new piece in juxtaposition to those that inspired it. It’s the fruit of this surprising confrontation that we can savor today with the release of this album, which retraces Jordi Savall’s simultaneously musical, humanist, and spiritual path through a series of recordings brought together as a musical portrait. This musical likeness is prolonged by the 14 contemporary pieces that make up these “Mirrors of Time,” like a dialogue between creators past and present in which Jordi Savall’s personality acts as a point of reference and meditation. © François Hudry/Qobuz
