Nel dicembre 2017, trentatré anni dopo la sua uscita, Legend festeggiava la cinquecentesima settimana consecutiva nel Billboard 200 americano. Un record superato soltanto da The Dark Side of the Moon dei Pink Floyd. Questa compilation, pubblicata tre anni dopo la morte di Bob Marley (nel 1981) e che viene ancora venduta in parecchie migliaia di copie ogni mese, ha superato di molto la barriera dei 30 milioni, ponendo Bob Marley sullo stesso piano delle icone del pop come Madonna, Michael Jackson e i Queen. Unico artista “non occidentale” a entrare in queste cerchie in genere riservate a inglesi e americani, il giamaicano ha senza dubbio beneficiato della forza d’urto commerciale dell’etichetta londinese Island e delle “smussature” apportate dai suoi ingegneri del suono. Anche se non bisogna sottovalutare la potenza e l’universalità della scrittura di Bob Marley, si può obiettivamente ritenere che le versioni grezze realizzate nello studio di Lee Perry nei primissimi anni ’70 non avrebbero ottenuto lo stesso successo.
A volte questa compilation postuma, in cui la lista dei brani va dritta allo scopo di raggiungere quanta più gente possibile, è stata tacciata di mancanza di rappresentatività, ma è difficile negare la sua efficacia. Contiene infatti tutti i brani più popolari della carriera di Bob, tra cui parecchi estratti di Exodus, composto per la maggior parte a Londra – Jamming, Punky Reggae Party, Three Little Birds, One Love, Waiting in Vain – e soprattutto i pezzi più crossover di Tuff Gong, che ha tenuto le orecchie aperte, per tutta la sua carriera, alle altre correnti musicali: soul, disco, rock, e persino punk. Vi troviamo gli inni No Woman No Cry e Redemption Song, che hanno regalato a Marley l’immagine di un Dylan nero, ma nessuna canzone degli album Natty Dread, Rastaman Vibration, Babylon by Bus e Survival, né brani troppo politici o violenti come War, che riprende il discorso dell’imperatore d’Etiopia Hailé Selassié all’ONU, o la straziante Burning and Looting (eccetto I Shot The Sheriff, passaggio obbligato dopo il rifacimento di Clapton). Perfetta introduzione al reggae per i neofiti, Legend fu per parecchio tempo l’albero che nascondeva la giungla di talentuosi artisti giamaicani dietro Bob Marley.
