Tanto affascinante quanto spiazzante, Annie Clark - alias St. Vincent - gioca perennemente con tendenze, suoni e influenze, come se fosse slegata dal suo tempo. Nel 2013, nel suo album omonimo St. Vincent, ha miscelato uno spirito alla Talking Heads con delle texture degne dei King Crimson, guardando tanto alla new wave degli anni ‘80 quanto a David Bowie, l'artista a cui probabilmente viene associata più spesso... Quattro anni dopo, Masseduction, il suo quinto album, con i suoi testi intimi e le sue frasi nude e crude poteva essere considerato quello più personale. Tuttavia, le introspezioni non le hanno impedito di sfoderare alcuni intermezzi eccentrici, persino surrealisti, rendendolo così il suo album più “Bowie” fino ad allora! Daddy's Home compie un ulteriore passo avanti in questo senso, guardando al periodo Young Americans (1975) del Duca Bianco. E anche sul piano personale: il titolo, Daddy's Home, richiama il ritorno a casa di suo padre, uscito di prigione nel 2019 dopo una pesante condanna per appropriazione indebita... Il vero shock qui è principalmente estetico, l'atmosfera generale dell'album ricolloca chiaramente la Clark dagli anni '80 agli anni '70. Così come si passa dalla cold wave e il pop elettronico al rock intriso di soul e persino di funk. Come nella title track, che suona come una versione inedita di There's a Riot Goin' di Sly and the Family Stone. O quando si lancia in un vero assolo di chitarra su Live in the Dream, un tema magniloquente che nell'edonismo ricorda Prince e nelle ascese ricorda i Pink Floyd (cita persino Dark Side of the Moon su The Melting Of The Sun). St. Vincent non cerca mai di essere orecchiabile, così come non cerca la hit a tutti i costi.
