Trio 3
Formed in the late 1990s, Trio 3 is an American all-star jazz group comprised of saxophonist Oliver Lake (born September 14, 1942), drummer Andrew Cyrille (born November 10, 1939) and bassist Reggie Workman (born June 26, 1937). Although each member of the band has an impressive resume – with over 130 combined years spent working with legends like John Coltrane, Herbie Mann, Art Blakey, Lou Reed, and others - when they come together, they set their iconic statuses aside and let the music speak for itself. Each member is an inventive and distinctive musician, but this group allows them to create organic improvisations that have dazzled and impressed critics and jazz fans alike. The group released Live in Willisau in 1997 followed by a series of well received albums including Encounter (2000), Open Ideas (2002), Time Being (2006), and Visiting Texture (2017). Trio 3 also collaborated with several other artists, recording albums with Irene Schweizer (2009’s Bern Concert), Geri Allen (2009’s At This Time and 2011's Celebrating Mary Lou Williams – Live at Birdland New York), Jason Moran (2013’s Refraction – Breakin’ Glass), and Vijay Iyer (2014’s Wiring).
