LaToya Jackson

One of the siblings in the famous musical family, singer, author, and screen personality La Toya Jackson entered show biz in the '70s alongside her brothers and sisters -- singing, dancing, and performing skits on their variety show The Jacksons -- before embarking on a solo career in the '80s. During that era, her singles for Polydor, Larc, Private I, and Palass were slight hits, though "Bet'cha Gonna Need My Lovin'" and "Heart Don't Lie" each peaked in the Top 30 on the U.S. R&B charts. The latter track appeared on her third album of the same name, which charted on the Billboard 200. Following the success of Heart Don't Lie, Jackson tried her hand at songwriting, fashion branding, and advertising. She also came under management by Jack Gordon, who she would later marry. Around this time, her public persona began to shift. She was separated from her family, wrote a controversial autobiography, appeared in Playboy, and hosted an infomercial plugging psychic phenomena. In the mid-'80s, she signed a year-long deal with the world-famous Moulin Rouge in Paris, but left after only four months, a contract-breaking move that cost her half-a-million dollars. Her country album, 1994's From Nashville to You, did not fare well, nor did 1995's dance-oriented Stop in the Name of Love. Throughout the decade, she also reported consistent abuse by Gordon; she also claimed that he controlled her and kept her from her family. She was finally able to escape Gordon with the help of her brother Randy, finalizing a divorce in 1997. Jackson soon reconciled with her family and began working on her comeback. The single "Just Wanna Dance" was released in 2004, released under Jackson's nickname, Toy. The song peaked at number 13 on the Hot Dance chart. The follow-up single "Free the World" fared just as well. Both tracks would eventually be included on Starting Over, released by the Ja-Tail label in 2011. In the 2020s, Jackson maintained her public presence, appearing on reality shows like Celebrity Big Brother, The Apprentice, and The Masked Singer, wrote another memoir, and appeared off-Broadway.
