Being As An Ocean
A melodic hardcore outfit from Alpine, California, Being as an Ocean combine drifting atmospheres with aggressive outbursts. After emerging in 2011, the band flirted with mainstream success in 2014 with the release of their Billboard-charting sophomore effort, How We Both Wondrously Perish. They continued to refine their visceral post-rock and emotional hardcore sound on subsequent releases, including 2015's Being as an Ocean, 2017's Waiting for Morning to Come, and 2019's Proxy: An A.N.I.M.O. Story. Following an expanded reissue of their 2012 debut, Dear G-D, they delivered their sixth full-length, 2024's Death Can Wait.
Formed in 2011 and initially made up of singer Joel Quartuccio, guitarists Tyler Ross and Jacob Prest, bassist Ralph Sica, and drummer Shad Hamawe, the group developed a sound that merged post-rock and melodic hardcore with Quartuccio's harsh vocals, creating an interesting dynamic between the singer and the rest of the band. They debuted their sound on 2012's Dear G-D, which was released on InVogue Records.
In 2013, the band parted ways with Prest and Hamawe, who had begun to grow tired of life on the road, replacing them with guitarist Michael McGough and drummer Connor Denis. On top of handling guitar duties, McGough also provided the group with a clean vocalist, expanding Being as an Ocean's toolbox and offsetting Quartuccio's anguished vocals with something more soaring. The band debuted their new members on their sophomore album, 2014's How We Both Wondrously Perish, which launched them onto the Billboard 200. It also charted in the rock, hard rock, alternative, and independent Top 25, as did their third LP, the eponymous Being as an Ocean, a year later. Waiting for Morning to Come followed in 2017 on the Impericon label and returned the band to the Independent Albums chart. In 2019, they issued Proxy: An A.N.I.M.O. Story, which included the single "Play Pretend" and adopted a more grandiose, arena rock style.
A pair of stand-alone singles, "Lost" and "Catch the Wind," appeared in 2021. That same year, founding members Tyler Ross and Ralph Sica parted ways with the band, leaving singer Quartuccio and instrumentalist McGough to forge ahead as a duo. A deluxe edition of the group's 2012 debut, Dear G-D, followed in 2022 boasting added bonus tracks. In August 2023, Being as an Ocean released the first single and title track off their sixth studio album, Death Can Wait, which arrived in February 2024.
