Three years on from It’s A Pleasure, his fourth album, Baxter Dury remains as seductive as ever with Prince Of Tears. Having dealt rather well with his "son of" status, the British quadragenarian has been taking some unexpected paths through some multi-layered pop, sometimes puckish, occasionally disco-flavoured, but always enjoyable, bearing witness to his knack for finding a catchy refrain.
His late and illustrious father was loved for bawling sex and drugs and rock’n’roll. But Dury Jr. seems to be a long way from that, preferring to play the unpredictable, off-the-wall dandy. Put together with Ash Workman (Metronomy, Christine and the Queens) and mixed by Craig Silvey (Arcade Fire), the Prince of Tears is a perfect showcase for his speech/song. A mind-blowing fifth album that keeps you on your toes.
