KNIGHTSTOWN

Downtempo electronic pop project Knightstown is the brainchild of Brighton, England musician Michael Aston, who signed to cult indie label FatCat after his demo submission "Disparity" became one of the most-listened-to recordings on their public demo site. His eponymous debut album, replete with lush ambient pop and haunting falsetto vocals, was released in 2018. Aston's relationship with music began even before his birth, when his pregnant mother obsessively played Bach's violin concertos. He himself took violin lessons, beginning in elementary school; he also learned to play the piano. Writing songs from an early age, his first proper musical project was with his cousin Tom Aston, a producer who introduced him to electronic music acts like Sampha and James Blake. He studied music at Oxford, then moved to Glasgow to get his M.A. in composition at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, a much more multi-disciplinary environment where his ears were opened to other kinds of music, including pop acts like Stevie Wonder, Elton John, and the Beach Boys. There he met C Duncan, a fellow student who had recently signed to FatCat. Duncan invited Aston to join his touring band as a keyboardist; with them he toured Europe. When he decided to submit his own demo to FatCat in 2014, his track "Disparity" became hugely popular on their public demo site, leading to his signing with the label. FatCat co-founder Dave Cawley hooked Aston up with Matt Hodson, a senior lecturer at the BIMM music school in Brighton, who was eager to join the project; live, he provided electronic percussion and manipulation of Aston's keyboards and vocals. Knightstown's 2017 debut single "First Cry" was lush ambient pop with haunting falsetto vocals, and widely acclaimed. More singles followed, including "Eyes Open Wide" and the "Keep" EP. Knightstown's eponymous debut album arrived in 2018.
