Javo Barrera

Javo Barrera is a three-time Grammy-winning drummer, composer, producer, bandleader, and arranger from Mexico City. While his own recordings focus on modern jazz, his talent in session and live work is wide-ranging and wildly diverse: he has served as musical director and bandleader with La Quinta Estación, Mel Gaynor (Simple Minds), Alejandra Guzman, Natalia Jimenez, Paulina Rubio, Cristian Castro, Carlos Baute, Emmanuel, and many more. As a youngster, Barrera attended the prestigious Esquela Ollin Yoliztli in Mexico City. He studied symphonic percussion, piano, composition, and arranging under the tutelage of maestro Armando Zerquera. From this solid musical foundation, he went on to master a number of genres including classical, progressive rock, and jazz before exploding onto the Latin pop scene as a session and touring musician and musical director. In 2014 he issued his debut jazz fusion offering, Behind the Tree, and toured in support. He followed with 2015's Relaxing Light Music. In the aftermath, Barrera worked almost constantly on recordings and tours with some of the musicians listed above. Far from Home was released in 2017; the album of Barrera's compositions featured guest spots from Najee, Rene Toledo, Osmany Paredes, Luis Aquino, and Andrew Gouche.
