Taking grinding sludge to a weird and great new place, on Thrones' self-titled release Joe Preston merrily lives up to the sleeve-cover dedication to "all the headbangers, earthdogs, and metal merchants around the world." Preston's erstwhile colleagues in Melvins remain the only logical reference point for what's going on -- songs like "Manmtn," with Preston's quavering, low howl adding to the deliberate crunch and crush of the arrangement, might as well be outtakes from a Melvins demo session. Though he has his own individual stamp on display here, with drum machine loops sometimes betraying an on-the-face-of-it strange but appropriate link to stuttering glitch/IDM culture. Throw in all the distorted vocal roars and feedback as brutal texture and just maybe there's a reason to call Preston Aphex Twin's metalhead cousin at points. Certainly "Oso Malo" has a lot of that spirit, enough to qualify for a Warp Records remix perhaps. Down-tuned bass mania is still the main weapon of choice, though, and the slowly breaking-down grumble of "Nuts and Berries" and "The Anguish of Bears" gets the point across in a loud, extremely annoyed fashion. However, there's relative gentility at points, such as the clanging bells that begin the wonderful cover of Louis Enrique Bacalov's spaghetti western theme "Django," not to mention the reasonably clean guitar twang of the main melody itself. "Obolus," the lengthy album-ender perhaps perversely dedicated to cartoon characters Nancy and Veronica, starts with halfway sweet Vocodered voices chanting over keyboards -- which seems peaceful enough until it's clear the voices are asking for fellatio. Meanwhile, both "Acris Venator" and "Ephraim" are solo instrumental performances rather than full songs, yet contain all the collapsing, unsettled air of the other pieces, even when it's only one bass rumble against the universe. ~ Ned Raggett
