5 Billion in Diamonds

5 Billion in Diamonds are a transatlantic alt-rock supergroup consisting of American producer/drummer Butch Vig (Garbage, Nirvana), British producer Andy Jenks, and DJ James Grillo, also of the U.K. Their cinematic retro-pop-driven rock is complimented in the studio by guest vocalists like Ebbott Lundberg (the Soundtrack of Our Lives), David Schelzel (the Ocean Blue), Helen White (Alpha). After making their debut in 2017, the band returned with their sophomore outing, Divine Accidents, in 2020. Longtime friends Vig and Grillo bonded over a shared love of wine, old art house films, and music from the 1960s and '70s. The project grew out of the idea of soundtracking an imaginary '60s cult-classic B-movie, the title of which, 5 Billion in Diamonds, was suggested by Grillo. With a name and concept in place, they brought in Grillo's friend Jenks, a well-known producer in England's Bristol-area scene. For their eponymous 2017 debut, the trio reached out to vocalists like Lundberg, White, Schelzel, and Sandra Dedrick (the Free Design) to contribute parts. They also enlisted some of the top-notch Bristol session musicians from Jenks' circle. Three years later, they repeated the process, again attempting to soundtrack an imaginary movie, this time adding James Bagshaw (Temples) and Martin Barnard (Alpha) to their stable of returning collaborators. Released in 2020, Divine Accidents expanded their sonic template with a mixture of '80s synth and vintage folk vibes.
