Angel Olsen has obviously listened to Cat Power, Hope Sandoval of Mazzy Star, Kate Bush, Leonard Cohen and PJ Harvey. Nevertheless, this Missouri native imposed a unique voice on her brilliant album, Burn Your Fire For No Witness, released in 2014. With My Woman, her third album, which has just been released by Jagjaguwar, she confirms her status as a new goddess for indie folk aficionados who like a bit of grunge, Americana and vintage sounds. Olsen's voice rears up and then caresses, then beats at you again before hypnotizing. Ditto for her melodies, ranging from untamed guitars (the amazing Sister!) to Gothic ballads. And when her songs are bathed in a halo of retro-reverb, it's ecstasy! With a stronger style and more muscular writing, Will 'Bonnie Prince Billy' Oldham's former backup singer has created her best record, and one of the most beautiful in 2016.
